26 Best Waterside Campsites in South Africa

Summer is almost upon us and you all know what that means, right? It’s time to haul out the camping gear, dust off the old skottel braai and head away for a bit of rough and tumble fun!

Although I’m sure we could all agree that camping is definitely more suited to summer months, the heat may get a little intense at times. But it’s nothing a refreshing dip can’t fix… that’s why we’ve rounded up 26 sea, river and dam-side campsites to pitch a tent and pack off around South Africa.

Take a look and tell us which you would add to the list! In no particular order:

Sea

1. Victoria Bay Campsite, George, Western Cape

Stands available: 36

Number of people per stand: Ideally 4, but you can squeeze six in at a cost of R25 per extra person.

Ground cover: Grass Ablution & facilities: While most of the stands share communal ablution facilities that offer hot water and flushing toilets, there are 10 that have private bathrooms. All stands have 220-volt power points, braai facilities and most are wheelchair friendly.

Activities: Apart from being one of the prettiest beaches on the Garden Route, Victoria Bay is especially famous for two things: fishing and surfing. An iconic little peer allows fishermen to cast their lines into the water right between where the surfers ride and the swimmers frolic, meaning that no-one’s water-based activity interferes with anyone else’s. The smooth right point break tops many-a wave rider’s favourite surf spot list and may get crowded over December holidays. However, it’s still definitely worth a paddle out.

Rates: Stands with communal ablutions – R380 per night in season, R225 per night out of season. Stands with private ablutions – R400 per night in season, R255 per night out of season.

Contact details: Telephone – 044 889 0081. Also check out the Victoria Bay Caravan Park website.

2. Jongensfontein Caravan Park, Stilbaai, Western Cape

Selfs al is dit nie somer nie bly dit maar net ‘n mooi plek. #Jongensfontein#GoldattheendoftheRainbow#amperweertyd   A photo posted by Johan De Jager (@johan.dejager.520) on

Stands available: 115

Number of people per stand: 6

Ground cover: Mostly grass and a few of the stands even offer some shade.

Ablution & facilities: Communal ablution blocks offering warm baths and showers, as well as flush toilets. All stands have standard power points. Bring your own braai.

Activities: Located just 16km from the ever-so-popular seaside resort of Stilbaai, Jongensfontein offers a cosy and relatively quiet alternative. While the rocky shoreline provides a host of perfect perches from which to cast your fishing line, the beach is a hit with sunbathers, swimmers and surfers. There are also a variety of hiking trails taking you along both the beach and into the surrounding fynbos.

Rates: High season – R390 per night, Season – R200 per night, off season – R155 per night

Contact details: Telephone – 028 713 7850. Also check out the Explorer’s Garden Route website for more details.

With direct access to Banana Beach, swimming, surfing, fishing and exploring rock pools couldn’t be easier! For those who aren’t fond of dipping more than their feet into the ocean (although with shark nets and a tidal pool, there’s really nothing to be afraid of), dive right into the resort’s sparkling swimming pool or indulge in a game of tennis or darts.
