No matter how you choose to celebrate the holiday season, you can’t ignore the cosy allure of Europe’s Christmas markets. Known as Weihnachtsmarkt in Hamburg, Germany where they are most popular, nowhere else in the north of Germany are there so many Christmas markets within such close proximity of each other.

Hamburg has much to offer in the festive season: you can enjoy a mug of glühwein on a boat trip on the Alster, or visit a Christmas exhibition in one of the city’s museums. Every Saturday during Advent there is a Christmas parade through the festively decorated city centre.

The Christmas market pictured takes place annually at Rathausmarkt Square in Hamburg. This year it is happening from 24 November to 23 December 2014, and will be open daily from 12pm – 8pm (Fri and Sat until 10pm).
