I’m not sure quite when it happened, but Durban seems to have become the crafty capital of South Africa. Nowhere is this more evident than in their weekend markets: the by-now-famous I Heart Market, and the more recent Wonder Market. It’s not just their names that are fabulous – they’re filled with all kinds of wonderful things to lust after.
I Heart Market provides a platform for local foodies and designers to showcase their beautiful goods, all handmade. With everything from creative jewellery to quirky ceramics, stylish clothing and irresistible décor, unexpected trinkets like stationery, toys and vintage treasures, you’ll find it difficult to leave without buying something. And even if you manage to resist the retail therapy segment of the market, the delicious food on offer will lure you in for a cup of freshly brewed coffee or a tasty little morsel. Wonder Market is the Umhlanga cousin to the city I Heart Market. Held on the first Sunday of the month in the beautiful Chris Saunders Park in Umhlanga, the Wonder Market trades in ‘food, craft and treasure’ and has something for everyone, from kids to foodies to fashionistas. Their parma ham, rocket and parmesan super-thin-and-crunchy pizza creations are a thing of beauty, and their homemade lemonade is simply delicious. I’ve also heard great things about kudu burgers, cupcakes and falafel, but you’ll have to pop in yourself to take a look. There are all kinds of vintage goodies on offer, too, and you can stock up on any manner of special ingredients, or just take home some baked treats for afternoon tea. Located right next to the Gateway shopping centre, this is a great way to while away a Sunday morning.
