Best time to visit Alaska

Alaska experiences a subarctic climate, with brief warm summers and long snowy winters. Temperatures range from 27 degrees Celsius in summer to -15 degrees Celsius in winter. Temperatures vary according to regions: the interior is warmer, while the northern areas are colder. Activities such as dog mushing, skiing and snowmobiling abound during winter (November to April). Days can be short and the temperatures glacial, but Alaskan winters are unforgettably spectacular. Spring (May to June) and summer (July to August) are ideal for outdoor activities, exploring the landscapes and wildlife viewing. If you want to witness the Northern Lights, the best time to visit is in autumn (September to October) and the end of winter. For cheap flights to Alaska, the best time to visit is in the heart of winter.

Alaska is considered a safe state. However, it is recommended that you remain vigilant and take certain precautions as you would in any unfamiliar and sprawling city. Travel insurance to cover theft and medical expenses is recommended.

Alaska is also a wild and fierce place that can be unforgiving to the ill-equipped and ill-informed. If you plan to venture into the back-country or embark on a self-guided tour, considerable research should be done beforehand. Research should also be done on how to handle and avoid encounters with bears and moose, as these creatures are free roaming throughout the state. Be vigilant and take it slow when driving in snow or when roads are icy.

Proof of yellow fever vaccination is required if you are travelling from a yellow fever endemic area. Mosquitoes can be a problem during the summer months, so precautions should be taken to avoid being bitten. Immunisation against hepatitis B and rabies are recommended. Other routine vaccinations include MMR, diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis, varicella, polio and influenza.
