How To Book Multi-City Flights

Multi-city flights refer to a period of travel that is broken for longer than 24 hours in more than one stop on the trip. For example, a flight from Johannesburg to Hong Kong, via Dubai in which you would spend 3 days. This ticket gives you the opportunity to quickly pop in and see your friend in Dubai for a few days, while en route to honeymooning in Hong Kong!
Along with affording you the option of seeing an extra city on your trip, multi-city flight tickets often work out a lot cheaper than booking separate flights to different destinations.

Bear in mind that some airlines may charge you a stop-over fee with each break in your journey, however, it still works out cheaper than making separate trips.

Refine your search results:

The “Filter Results” tab on the left-hand-side of the search results page allows you to filter your results according to price range, cabin class, number of stops, departure times, and preferred airline. This is really useful if you are travelling on a tight schedule and need to get to your destination in the shortest possible time, or if you have certain flight preferences.

How to secure the cheapest tickets:

Don’t leave booking your flight to the last minute if you can help it. Prices increase one to two weeks before departure and during the holiday and peak seasons. Beat the price hike by booking your flights at least six months in advance and by opting to travel to popular destinations during off-peak season.

To secure the best flight deals, most people believe the best time to book is in the morning and late at night, when discounted flights are reloaded. Tuesdays are known to be the best days to book flights, when airlines typically launch their airfare sales. Flights departing at lunch time and on Saturday afternoons and evenings are said to be cheaper than other flights.

Be flexible:

While we do recommend booking flights in advance to make sure you get exactly what you want, keep in mind that it pays to be a little flexible with your travel plans. Feel free to adjust your travel dates to suit special promotions and flight deals.

With Travelstart, you have the opportunity to upgrade and book a “Flexi Ticket”, allowing you 1 FREE date change to your booking. Simply tick the “Flexi Tickets” box in the More Options drop down. This option is subject to the same fare and class availability. You can also select the “Rebookable Flight” option in Step 3 when entering passenger details. Avoid the stress of something unforeseen happening, with peace of mind of a free date change. Read more about how to book flights with flexible dates.

Compare airlines:

Have the freedom to choose travel dates that suit you without worrying about whether the airline can accommodate your travel plans. Travelstart’s platform allows you to compare your travel search with multiple airlines, picking the flight that best suits you. Enter the destination of your choice in the search box, and you’ll be provided with a list of airports in that city. Bear in mind that certain airlines may not serve smaller airports, but you’ll find most major airlines serving all major airports around the world.

For domestic flights, low cost carriers like Mango and Kulula are significantly cheaper than full-service carriers, like SAA. Smaller airlines are able to offer cheaper flights by cutting out extras like baggage allowance and spacious legroom. Mix and match multiple airlines, and save big on domestic and international flights.
