Raith Gourmet

Okay, now this one really is a secret of the locals. Seriously, if you crack this lunchtime spot, you are practically a Cape Town local – you might as well just pack your bags and move to the Mother City.

What am I talking about? Raith Gourmet, aka Raiths, aka The Most Delicious Lunch Spot in the City (and I say that knowing full well that Cape Town is full of delicious lunch spots). The thing is that Raiths is one of those places you suddenly have a craving for, and nothing else will do. Nothing at all. They specialise in German meats of all descriptions, and for years I thought their sandwiches were the bee’s knees – multi-layered salami or ham or roast beef with cheese, tomato, lettuce and mayonnaise, simply delicious!

That is, until I tasted their bratwurst and bockwurst. And I’ve never looked back. Their freshly grilled German sausages on a salted roll with lashings of tomato sauce are as close to lunch heaven as you can get. And if rolls aren’t your thing, you can have them with mashed potato, sauerkraut, gravy – the works! That said, you could also have steak tartare, or kassler chops, or any combination of the delicious deli goods on offer, but if you’re a first time Raiths fan, you’ve got to go for the bratwurst. Trust me.

Raiths is also a butchery, so if you prefer to do your cooking at home there’s plenty of inspiration. And it sells all kinds of German delicacies that you can’t get elsewhere – from sauces and pickles to biscuits and treats.

Yes, there are all kinds of things that set Raiths apart. But if you’re looking for the one that will make you look like a real Capetonian, head on over to Gardens Centre of a lunchtime and order yourself a bratwurst. I’ll see you there!
