There are over 3,000 mosques in Istanbul of all sizes. Some of them were built during the Ottoman period.<\/p>\n<h3>The Blue Mosque<\/h3>\n<p>Known for its staggering size and exquisite beauty, the mosque was built between 1609 and 1616, by the architect Mehmet A\u011fa, instructed by Sultan Ahmet I. It\u2019s also known as Sultanahmet Mosque and is dubbed the Blue Mosque because of over 20,000 handmade ceramic Iznik tiles that decorate the interior. Like many other mosques, it also houses the tomb of the founder, a madrasah and a hospice<\/p>\n<p>Address: Sultan Ahmet Mahallesi, Fatih | Contact: +90 212 458 4468 | Admission: Free<\/p>\n<h3>Hagia Sophia<\/h3>\n<p>Built in 360 as the Greek Orthodox patriarchal basilica, it remained an imperial mosque for almost 500 years until 1935 when Atat\u00fcrk converted it into a museum so everyone could have access to this architectural masterpiece and admire both Christian and Islamic art.<\/p>\n<p>Address: Sultanahmet Meydani, Eminonu | Contact: +90 212 522 17 50 | Admission: 40 TL (R93)<\/p>\n<h3>S\u00fclemaniye Mosque<\/h3>\n<p>Built as a tribute to Sultan S\u00fcleyman the Magnificent, the longest reigning sultan of the Ottoman Empire (1520-1566). The Suleymaniye Mosque was the fourth imperial mosque built in Istanbul with ten balconies that represent Osmanl\u0131 sultans to rule the city and the 10th sultan after the establishment of the empire. It\u2019s also home to the tombs of S\u00fcleyman and his wife Haseki H\u00fcrrem Sultan (Roxelana).<\/p>\n<p>Address: S\u00fcleymaniye Mah, 34116 Fatih | Contact: +90 212 5140139 | Admission: Free<\/p>\n<h3>Fatih Mosque<\/h3>\n<p>Named after Ottoman Sultan Mehmet II (Mehmet the Conqueror) who commissioned the mosque in 1463. The original mosque was damaged by the 1509, 1557, and 1754 earthquakes. The only surviving elements from the fifteenth-century design are the mosque\u2019s external portal, tombs of Mehmet II and his wife, and some parts of the mosque\u2019s courtyard.<\/p>\n<p>Address: Fatih T\u00fcrbesi Sok. 34083 Fatih | Phone: +90 212 524 6410 | Admission: Free<\/p>\n<h3>Ortak\u00f6y Mosque<\/h3>\n<p>Built in 1853 with wide and high windows that are arranged in such a way that moves the changing light of Bosphorus inside the mosque. The main chamber is small and square shaped, its edge 12.25m in length. The ceiling is a dome shape, covered in pink mosaics. There are two tall minarets, each with a single sherefe (minaret balcony). Attached is the two storey H\u00fcnkar Kasr\u0131 (sultan\u2019s summer palace). During Ottoman times, it was a centre for printing and literary trade, drawing many intellectuals and writers to the area. The tower has served as a merchantman tax collection centre, a defense tower, and a lighthouse since it was built 341 BC.<\/p>\n<p>Address: \u00dcsk\u00fcdar | Contact: +90 216 342 4747 | Admission: 20TL (R47)<\/p>\n<h3>Dolmabah\u00e7e Clock Tower<\/h3>\n<p>Located between Be\u015fikta\u015f and Kabata\u015f, this is one of the five clock towers built during the reign of Abd\u00fclhamid II (r. 1876-1909). The actual clock for this four-storey tower was made by Johann Mayer, one of the earliest clock masters working for a famous watch brand, Paul Garnier.<\/p>\n<p>Address: Dolmabah\u00e7e street, Be\u015fikta\u015f | Contact: +90 212 236 3577 | Admission: 60TL<\/p>\n<h3>Tower of Justice<\/h3>\n<p>The tower was built during the reign of Sultan Mehmed II as a symbol of the imperial court. Today the 85-metre tall tower still serves the city as a fire-watch tower and an informant for weather forecasts. These stairs are no more than a pedestrian walkway but one cannot fail to notice their exquisite design, standing out from the more typical Gothic spires or ottoman geometry. Built and named after the House of Camondo, an influential family of European Jews who settled in Turkey in the 1490\u2019s.<\/p>\n<h3>The Obelisk of Theodosius<\/h3>\n<p>The oldest monument in Istanbul is a one-piece (monolith) pink granite obelisk carved in Aswan. Originally it was over 30 meters tall and weighed around 380 tons, today only 19 metres left of it. Both have walking paths and plenty of trees. The best time to visit G\u00fclhane Park is in April when the old gardens of Topkap\u0131 Palace are filled with colorful flowers for the annual Tulip Festival.
