Weather in Madagascar<\/h2>\n

Madagascar has a tropical climate, with a hot and rainy season occurring between November and March (summer), and a cool dry season from May to October (winter). The altitude and geographical positions result in a vast difference in temperatures throughout the various regions. Madagascar\u2019s north region is described as hot and humid, the east coast experiences much more rains than the west coast, while the far south and southwest is a semi-arid region which experiences extremely little rainfall throughout the year. In the central region, Antananarivo<\/a>, temperatures can vary from 20\u00b0C during the day to 5\u00b0C at night in the dry season. As the eastern region is the wettest on the island, it usually rains almost every day in Toamasina<\/a> as well as during the dry season. For the most part, temperatures average between 20\u00b0C and 28\u00b0C along the eastern region. Expect dry conditions in the western region as the climate is described as dry tropical. In the western region, it never rains during the dry season and temperatures average between 20\u00b0C and 25\u00b0C.<\/div>\n

The Wet Season<\/h3>\n

Madagascar\u2019s summer (November \u2013 March) is considered the wet season. It rains throughout the island, although the arid west and southwest do not experience many rains. January to March witnesses heavy rain and most parts of the country are difficult to get to as roads are muddy and become impassable. February brings a high risk of fierce cyclones, particularly in the northeast of Madagascar, so plan your travel around this. During the cyclone season bridges are broken, roads and riverbanks are swept away, which is why this is not the best time to visit Madagascar\u2019s east coast and highlands.<\/p>\n

Highlights of the wet season:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Accommodation is cheaper and there are fewer tourists if that\u2019s what you\u2019re hoping for during your Madagascan holiday. This is the best time to visit Madagascar for spotting animals like chameleons, lizards and snakes. November is a great time to take beautiful photographs of the surrounding, bright and vibrant flora that’s endemic to Madagascar. Head to Andasibe National Park<\/em> and hear the calls of the indri, the largest lemur, upon an early morning walk.<\/p>\n

The Dry Season<\/h3>\n

The dry season (May – October) is considered the best time to visit Madagascar. Madagascar\u2019s dry season falls in the winter months, however, the island\u2019s winter season is not to be mistaken for gloom and cold. Winter on the island signifies the end of the rainfall and humidity, and it welcomes cooler temperatures.<\/p>\n

On the east coast, it rains all year round, but the sunniest period is in the winter months between May and August. Nosy Be<\/a> offers maximum temperatures of 30\u00b0C.<\/p>\n

Navigating from one part of the island to the next is easier during the dry season as roads aren\u2019t muddied by constant showers. Expect light drizzles which help you to cool down. At night, the temperatures decrease dramatically often reaching as little as 10\u00b0C in Antananarivo<\/strong>. Do not forget to pack some warm clothes when visiting during the dry season.<\/p>\n

In the south, temperatures average around 25\u00b0C from June to September. July to August is peak season<\/strong> in Madagascar and it is advised to book your accommodation and tours well in advance to avoid disappointment.<\/p>\n

Highlights of the dry season<\/strong><\/p>\n

Spot humpback whales<\/strong> as they migrate from the Antarctic to the surrounding \u00cele Sainte-Marie<\/strong> waters. The dry season welcomes migratory birds which can be spotted at Andasibe, Mantadia <\/em>and Ranomafana National Parks. <\/em>September to October is a great time for nature lovers to visit Madagascar as the island\u2019s wildlife graze the lands freely.<\/p>\n

Daylight Hours<\/h2>\n

Madagascar\u2019s daylight hours increase as the summer\/rainy season approaches. During summer, you can expect up to 13 hours of daylight, while in the winter months (from April to September) you\u2019ll be exposed to an average of 11 hours of daylight.<\/p>\n

Sea Temperatures<\/h2>\n

Sea temperatures are warm throughout the year in Madagascar. During summer, sea temperatures can reach up to 29\u00b0C. The best time to visit Madagascar\u2019s beaches is during the dry, winter season. The sea temperatures average around 26\u00b0C in Nosy Be. Further south, along the west coast, the sea temperatures remain high throughout the year. In winter, it only drops to 25\u00b0C from July to September.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re visiting Madagascar\u2019s east coast, expect sea temperatures to fall slightly from 28\u00b0C to 24\u00b0C from July to October.<\/p>\n

Madagascar’s diving season is year-round, but for the best sightings of marine life like whale sharks, manta rays and dolphins consider July to September to enjoy the island’s water at Nosy-Be,\u00a0\u00cele Sainte-Marie, Paroi des Merou and Pointe Alebrand. Water activities along with diving include snorkelling, deep sea fishing, windsurfing and kayaking.<\/p>\n

Peak season (July to August)<\/h3>\n

The peak season for travelling to Madagascar is in the winter months of July to August<\/strong>. This is no surprise as the weather is beautiful and pleasant with fewer chances of rain. You can expect to pay up to 20% more for flights.<\/p>\n

Shoulder Season (April to June)<\/h3>\n
