Travelling visa-free is far from reality for many trips. We are beset by restrictive limitations with nasty officials who demand endless pages of documents before we&#8217;re allowed a visa, for which we still have to pay a hefty fee. Our immediate neighbours offer great variety for the holiday-maker, like the rolling green hills and casinos of <strong>Swaziland,<\/strong> game-viewing in <strong>Botswana<\/strong>, mountain treks in <strong>Lesotho<\/strong>, desert holidays in <strong>Namibia<\/strong>, Vic falls in <strong>Zimbabwe &amp; Zambia<\/strong> and the snow-white beaches of <strong>Mozambique<\/strong>. Across the sea there are also great beach holidays to be had in the <strong>Seychelles and Mauritius<\/strong>\u00a0too.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Update December 2014<\/span>: This December\u00a0<strong>Tunisia\u00a0<\/strong>returns to the list of visa-free countries for South African passport holders. The Tunisian Embassy in Pretoria has confirmed that South African passport holders no longer require a visa to enter Tunisia for a stay of up to 90 days. Travellers were previously required to apply for a visa prior to arrival at a cost of R600. As of December 1, all that is required for entry into the country is a <a title=\"How to get a new SA Passport\" href=\"https:\/\/travelstartstg.wpenginepowered.com\/how-to-renew-your-south-african-passport\/\">valid SA passport<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Update July 2013<\/span>: <strong>Tanzania<\/strong> (including the island paradise of <a title=\"Zanzibar Travel Blog\" href=\"https:\/\/travelstartstg.wpenginepowered.com\/feel-free-this-is-zanzibar\">Zanzibar<\/a>) is now visa-free for South Africans. Madagascar now issues a free visa upon arrival and Senegal now requires visitors to have a visa before visiting.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Update June 2013<\/span>: <strong>Kenya<\/strong> now requires SA passport holders to have a visa to enter the country costing R750 (subject to change without notice). The requirement is in effect from 1 July 2014. Much of Central America welcomes South Africans too, meaning you can <strong>discover Mayan ruins<\/strong> in Guatemala &amp; Belize, explore the jungles of Costa Rica and <strong>hop between a myriad of Caribbean islands<\/strong> like Jamaica, Barbados and the Bahamas &#8211; all visa-free.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Visa-free South East Asia<\/h2>\n<p>As many South Africans know, much of South East Asia readily allows us in visa-free too, the countries you can visit here include Thailand for it&#8217;s <strong>jungles, beaches and shopping<\/strong>, Malaysia for top <strong>beach resorts<\/strong> and Singapore which is <strong>one of the world&#8217;s best stopover destinations<\/strong>. The hundreds of islands which make up the Philippines, a nature-rich tourism giant which is slowly awakening, can also be accessed with just your passport.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16279\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16279\" style=\"width: 290px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-16279 \" title=\"Hong Kong \" src=\"https:\/\/www.travelstart.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Hong-Kong-by-JES.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"187\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-16279\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Vibrant Hong Kong&#8217;s skyline &#8211; from J.E.S. on Flickr<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Visa-free Rest of the world<\/h2>\n<p>There are countries across the rest of the world which allow South Africans in visa-free for a holiday like emerald-green <strong>Ireland<\/strong>. <strong>Turkey<\/strong> used to offer a free visa on arrival, but have just implemented a procedure where you now have to apply for a Turkish visa (free of charge) online before applying, <a title=\"Free Turkish Electronic Visa\" href=\"https:\/\/www.evisa.gov.tr\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\">click here<\/a> for their website.\u00a0Visit the holy sites of <strong>Israel<\/strong> and spectacular ruins like the rock city of <strong>Petra in Jordan<\/strong> or make your way further east to some serious beach chilling in the <strong>Maldives or Fiji<\/strong>. Keep in mind that you can also visit South Korea and the enclaves in China like <strong>culturally vibrant Hong Kong and gambling mecca Macau<\/strong> visa-free and last but not least, the natural splendours of<strong> New Zealand<\/strong>!<\/p>\n<h2>Visas on Arrival<\/h2>\n<p>There are a number of countries which you can escape to last minute due to the fact that you can get a visa on arrival too, so keep in mind these fantastic destinations with lots to offer, popular ones highlighted in bold:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Armenia<\/li>\n<li>Bangladesh<\/li>\n<li>Burundi<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cambodia<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Dominican Republic<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ethiopia<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Indonesia (eg Bali)<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Laos<\/li>\n<li><strong>Madagascar (eg Nosy Be) &#8211; FREE on arrival<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Nepal<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Oman<\/li>\n<li>Uganda<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>NB: you will always need a passport and return\/onward ticket out of the country, maximum permitted stay varies; the above information is subject to change without notice and was correct at time of publishing. Visa-free and visa-on arrival is usually valid for 30 days, some countries allow longer validity, some allow only shorter validity.
