{"id":86954,"date":"2011-02-24T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2011-02-24T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/travelstartblg.wpenginepowered.com\/best-place-to-spot-planes-in-joburg\/"},"modified":"2025-11-04T13:49:41","modified_gmt":"2025-11-04T13:49:41","slug":"best-place-to-spot-planes-in-joburg","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.travelstart.co.za\/blog\/best-place-to-spot-planes-in-joburg\/","title":{"rendered":"Best place to spot planes in Jo\u2019burg"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-17148\" href=\"https:\/\/travelstartstg.wpenginepowered.com\/best-place-to-spot-planes-in-jo%e2%80%99burg\/lebombo\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-17148\" src=\"https:\/\/www.travelstart.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Lebombo.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"132\" height=\"132\" \/><\/a>If you love aircraft, especially historic birds, then take a drive out to Rand Airport in Germiston to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.saamuseum.co.za\/\">SAA Museum Society<\/a> on a Saturday or Sunday morning.<\/p>\n<p>There are plenty of cool places in Jo\u2019burg to go plane spotting, the most obvious being OR Tambo International in Boksburg. Sure, the viewing deck\u2019s advantageous, but you\u2019re quite restricted in the types of planes you\u2019re likely to see on the apron.<\/p>\n<p>Rather, travel southeast to the Transvaal Aviation Club where the SAA Museum Society is based. For just R25 for adults, and R15 for kids under 12, you can walk beneath the belly of a Boeing 747 beast, and peek into First Class.<\/p>\n<p>The SAA Museum Society is a bunch of passionate pilots and aviation anoraks committed to \u201cpreserving the history of South African Airways as well as that of general civil aviation in South Africa.\u201d<a rel=\"attachment wp-att-17151\" href=\"https:\/\/travelstartstg.wpenginepowered.com\/best-place-to-spot-planes-in-jo%e2%80%99burg\/the-dove\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-17151\" src=\"https:\/\/www.travelstart.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/The-Dove.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"132\" height=\"132\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The museum is independent of the national airline, and staffed by volunteers who restore and conserve the historic aircraft donated to them.<\/p>\n<p>Due to a lack of funding, only 6 of the 11 aircraft owned by the museum are on display at Aircraft Park, but wing-nuts will love getting up close to the de Havilland DH 104 Dove, the Lockheed L18-08 Lodestar, the Douglas DC-4 1009, the Douglas C-54D-15-DC, and the museum\u2019s 2 Boeing 747&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<p>Owing to the historic value of the aircraft, it\u2019s not possible to board any of the planes, except Lebombo, the Boeing 747-244B.<\/p>\n<p>Now retired, this is the aircraft that flew over Ellis Park Stadium at the Rugby World Cup final between South Africa and New Zealand with <em>Good Luck Bokke <\/em>emblazoned beneath her wings, in 1995.<\/p>\n<p>The only complaint that I (and everybody else in the visitor\u2019s book) had, is that there\u2019s no access to the flight deck. You\u2019ll have to settle for the flight simulator next door where some of the scenes of the rugby-flick <em>Invictus <\/em>were filmed.<\/p>\n<p>Do visit the small but interesting indoor museum, full of historic photos, and mementos of civil aviation in South Africa, before it closes at 14h00.<\/p>\n<p>Next to the museum, <a title=\"Biggles Bar &amp; Restaurant\" href=\"http:\/\/www.biggles.co.za\" target=\"_blank\">Biggles<\/a> is a ramshackle, but casual, and friendly restaurant and bar.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_17152\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17152\" style=\"width: 122px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-17152\" href=\"https:\/\/travelstartstg.wpenginepowered.com\/best-place-to-spot-planes-in-jo%e2%80%99burg\/brekkie-at-biggles\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-17152\" src=\"https:\/\/www.travelstart.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Brekkie-at-Biggles.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"132\" height=\"132\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-17152\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Brekkie at Biggles<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The booze is cheap and the food is simple and fresh \u2013 just ask the constant stream of locals that come to sit outdoors, watch the planes, let the kids play on the grass, and enjoy a meal here.<\/p>\n<p>In an hour or so, while we munched a fry-up, we saw 2 P-166S Albatros growl their way skyward for a casual flip, a tiger moth, a Sukhoi\u00a0 stunt plane, coloured smoke streaming behind him as he made a couple of low passes above the airfield, helicopters, Cessnas, and we could see jets in the distance coming in to land.<\/p>\n<p>Skip OR Tambo\u2019s over-full parking, the traffic jams, the crowds of passengers, and the predictable franchise restaurants.
