The island has a number of hotels, many of them with stilted bungalows hovering over the azure waters &#8211; it sounds like heaven! No wonder that requests for flights and packages to Bora Bora are something we get regularly, but few realise the difficulty in getting to this remote island and the costs involved from South Africa.<\/p>\n<div><a onclick=\"_gaq.push(['_trackEvent', 'Blog', 'Post Banner', 'Bora Bora']);\" href=\"http:\/\/www.travelstart.co.za\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.travelstart.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Generic-Flights-Banner2-10.07.2014.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<h2>Where is Bora Bora?<\/h2>\n<p>The island forms part of the French territory of French Polynesia, it&#8217;s an extinct volcano, surrounded by a coral reef and while close to it&#8217;s neighbouring islands is in a very remote part of the world.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It&#8217;s in the Southern Hemisphere<\/li>\n<li>It&#8217;s in the Pacific Ocean<\/li>\n<li>It&#8217;s 230\u00a0km\u00a0from the capital of French Polynesia, Papeete<\/li>\n<li>It&#8217;s 4000km from Auckland, New Zealand<\/li>\n<li>It&#8217;s 6500km from Los Angeles, USA<\/li>\n<li>and 15,000km from Johannesburg<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In short, it&#8217;s a long way away from anything, so be prepared for a long trip taking about 55 hours there and 45 hours back.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/travelstartstg.wpenginepowered.com\/bora-bora-for-south-africans\/bora_bora\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-19677\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-19677\" title=\"Bora Bora location\" alt=\"Map showing Bora Bora in relation to New Zealand, Australia and South Africa\" src=\"https:\/\/www.travelstart.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Bora_Bora.png\" width=\"614\" height=\"236\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>How do I get there and how much does it cost?<\/h2>\n<p>From South Africa, it&#8217;s quite a multi-leg journey using three separate return tickets usually involving flying via <a href=\"http:\/\/www.travelstart.co.za\/lp\/auckland\/flights\">New Zealand<\/a> or the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.travelstart.co.za\/lp\/new-york\/flights\">USA<\/a>.
