The <strong>A330-200 is a brand new plane<\/strong> and offers travellers <strong>direct flights from Cape Town to London<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Myself and Wouter set off for Century City and the <strong>Crystal Towers Hotel<\/strong> on Tuesday evening (11<sup>th<\/sup> October 2011) looking forward to cocktails snacks and a few celebratory glasses of wine. While the canap\u00e9s and chocolate brownies didn\u2019t disappoint, the real reason we were there was to find out more about this magnificent new aircraft.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/travelstartmu.wpenginepowered.com\/zablog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2025\/10\/SAA-A330-200.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-20925\" title=\"SAA A330-200\" src=\"https:\/\/travelstartmu.wpenginepowered.com\/zablog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2025\/10\/SAA-A330-200.png\" alt=\"SAA A330-200\" width=\"570\" height=\"210\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>South African Airways A330-200 Review<\/h2>\n<p>The evening began with a slick video production by <strong>South African Airways<\/strong> \u2013 some nostalgic black &amp; white footage from the early days led to the fast paced present and the beautiful <strong>SAA A330-200 Airbus<\/strong>. Believe me when I say this plane looks magnificent and is going to go a long way in impressing customers who were getting tired of the older SAA aircraft on the <strong>Cape Town to London route<\/strong>. Some points that stuck out for me:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>SAA have partnered with <strong>celebrity chef Reuben Riffel<\/strong> (of <em>Reuben\u2019s <\/em>at the One &amp; Only Hotel in Cape Town) to bring a monthly, unique dish onboard the A330-200 <strong>flights from Cape Town to London<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The <strong>SAA A330-200<\/strong> is powered by 2 Rolls Royce Trent 772B engines<\/li>\n<li>Every 52 seconds an A330 Airbus takes off somewhere in the world<\/li>\n<li>Typical speed is Mach 0.82<\/li>\n<li>Maximum altitude is 12.6km<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/travelstartmu.wpenginepowered.com\/zablog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2025\/10\/SAA-Business-Class-Economy-Seats.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-20943\" title=\"SAA Business Class &amp; Economy Seats\" src=\"https:\/\/travelstartmu.wpenginepowered.com\/zablog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2025\/10\/SAA-Business-Class-Economy-Seats.jpg\" alt=\"SAA Business Class &amp; Economy Seats\" width=\"570\" height=\"360\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>From the speeches it\u2019s evident that <strong>South African Airways<\/strong> are extremely proud of the newest addition to their ever growing fleet and for good reason. It\u2019s a faster, quieter and more environmentally friendly plane and with seating for 220 passengers they\u2019re well-positioned to meet the demand for <strong>flights from Cape Town to London<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>After the preliminaries we were asked to put our business cards into a draw in order to qualify for a mystery prize at the end of the evening\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/travelstartmu.wpenginepowered.com\/zablog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2025\/10\/SAA_A330_Business_Class_Cabin.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-20942\" title=\"SAA_A330_Business_Class_Cabin\" src=\"https:\/\/travelstartmu.wpenginepowered.com\/zablog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2025\/10\/SAA_A330_Business_Class_Cabin.png\" alt=\"SAA A330 Business Class Cabin\" width=\"570\" height=\"360\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Platinum Life Cardholder<\/h3>\n<p>While most of us in attendance were travel industry representatives, I happened to get chatting to Ken Gillham. I noticed he didn\u2019t have a nametag on so I asked what company he was from. It turned out that Mr. Gillham is an <strong>SAA Platinum Life Cardholder<\/strong> and had been invited to the event as he\u2019s a long standing and loyal customer of our national airline.<\/p>\n<p>He pulled the <strong>SAA Platinum Life card<\/strong> from his wallet so I could take a look. The card itself is pretty non-descript but it comes with some serious benefits and perks for the holder. One example of this is the <strong>airport limousine service<\/strong> Ken\u2019s entitled to at both point of origin and destination as a Platinum Life Cardholder. After speaking to Ken, it\u2019s obvious that one has to do A LOT of flying to become a <strong>South African Airways Platinum Life member<\/strong>. He used to work for BP as a safety and environmental official and flew all over the world with SAA, thus gaining insurmountable air miles. He still flies to the UK regularly and is looking particularly forward to the added comforts of <strong>South African Airways\u2019 new A330-200<\/strong>. In his speech he highlighted SAA\u2019s mantra and commitment of <em>Bringing South Africa to the world, and the world to South Africa<\/em>. Everyone was now fixated on the large fishbowl that had been used as a receptacle for all the business cards that had been collected for the 2 Business Class <strong>flight tickets from Cape Town to London<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Imagine my surprise when my name was drawn from the fishbowl! Having never flown Business Class, I\u2019m really looking forward to the experience and will be sure to report back on SAA\u2019s new A330-200 as well as the <strong>Cape Town to London flight<\/strong>.
