No matter your reasons, you\u2019re sure to find solace and soul renewal in the regions natural beauty.<\/p>\n<h2>The Cape Flower Route<\/h2>\n<p>While the <strong>West Coast National Park<\/strong> is well known for an abundance of birdlife, it\u2019s probably best known for the spring flowers. Every year <strong>from August to October<\/strong> the West Coast National Park region comes alive in a beautiful display of flowers and many will take time out on the weekend to drive up and experience this botanical masterpiece.<\/p>\n<p>As you leave Cape Town on the R27, the change in landscape becomes infinitely evident as the terrain takes on a distinctly \u2018Namibian\u2019 look and feel. With <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a title=\"Table Mountain\" href=\"https:\/\/travelstartstg.wpenginepowered.com\/vote-for-table-mountain\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Table Mountain<\/a><\/span> and the city in your rearview mirror, the <strong>West Coast Road<\/strong> winds gently up the side of South Africa, and as you pass Melkbosstrand (just half an hour from Cape Town) you already feel a million miles from anywhere.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.travelstart.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/cape-flower-route.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-21221\" title=\"cape-flower-route\" src=\"https:\/\/www.travelstart.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/cape-flower-route.jpg\" alt=\"Cape Flower Route\" width=\"570\" height=\"420\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Indigenous <strong>fynbos<\/strong> dots the undulating sand dunes left and right of the road, while the odd dent in the coastline opens itself to a small town with roadside vendors offering \u2018<strong>Bokkoms<\/strong>\u2019 &#8211; a Cape delicacy consisting of dried, salted fish\u2026 not for the faint hearted. After a short time you\u2019ll start to see why the R27 has earned its moniker \u2013 \u2018<strong>The Cape Flower Route\u2019<\/strong>. With nearly 4000 species of flowering plants expect to see a smorgasbord of colourful flowers at their best including (but not limited to); Gazanias, Felicia, Watsonia, and Ixia.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cape Flower Route Tip: <\/strong>Take note on your return (from the West Coast National Park to Cape Town) as the flowers turn towards the sun. From August to October (spring time) the sun shines from the north, so if you\u2019re driving south (towards Cape Town) you\u2019re bound to get an even better view of the sun facing flowers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.travelstart.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/wes-coast-tortoise.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-21222\" title=\"west-coast-tortoise\" src=\"https:\/\/www.travelstart.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/wes-coast-tortoise.jpg\" alt=\"West Coast Tortoise\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>The R27 takes you further north and the west coasts reputation as an untamed wilderness is firmly cemented as sightings of withered shipwrecks become more regular.<\/p>\n<p>Before long an unsuspecting tortoise crosses the road signaling your close proximity to the West Coast National Park.
