{"id":88398,"date":"2012-12-19T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2012-12-19T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/travelstartblg.wpenginepowered.com\/dangerous-airports-saint-maarten\/"},"modified":"2025-11-04T13:51:05","modified_gmt":"2025-11-04T13:51:05","slug":"dangerous-airports-saint-maarten","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.travelstart.co.za\/blog\/dangerous-airports-saint-maarten\/","title":{"rendered":"Dangerous Airports: Slap on sunscreen and mind the jet blast at Maho Beach"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When a plane lands at St Maarten\u2019s Princess Juliana International Airport in the Caribbean you could be forgiven for thinking you\u2019ve unwittingly stumbled across a film set reminiscent of Francis Ford Coppola\u2019s 1976 movie <em>Apocalypse Now<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Whether they like it or not, beach revelers on Saint Maarten\u2019s <strong>Maho Beach<\/strong> are treated to a <a title=\"Plane Spotting in South Africa\" href=\"https:\/\/travelstartstg.wpenginepowered.com\/plane-spotting-in-south-africa\/\" target=\"_blank\">planespotters<\/a> dream as aircraft of every kind (from large A330-200\u2019s to light island hoppers) swoop in over the bay on final approach to Runway 10.<\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/fdyA0fYnkTc\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2>Maho Beach<\/h2>\n<p><iframe src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/pIv_kS07S7E\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>World famous for its close-proximity photographs of landing aircraft, Princess Juliana International Airport has become for many a reason in itself to visit Sint Maarten.<\/p>\n<p>Due to its short runway (2180 metres), airplanes on final approach have to fly at unusually low altitudes above Maho Beach.<\/p>\n<p>Jet blast from departing aircraft is also another &#8216;attraction&#8217; as it creates artificial waves. According to <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Princess_Juliana_International_Airport\" target=\"_blank\">Wikipedia<\/a>, the airport handled 1 647 824 passengers and 103 650 aircraft movements in 2007.
