{"id":89709,"date":"2014-02-11T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2014-02-11T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/travelstartblg.wpenginepowered.com\/camping-in-big-sur\/"},"modified":"2025-11-04T13:51:53","modified_gmt":"2025-11-04T13:51:53","slug":"camping-in-big-sur","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.travelstart.co.za\/blog\/camping-in-big-sur\/","title":{"rendered":"Camping in Big Sur"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/travelstartstg.wpenginepowered.com\/camping-in-big-sur\/big-sur\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-31431\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-31431\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.travelstart.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Big-Sur.png\" width=\"419\" height=\"419\" \/><\/a>I don\u2019t know if you feel the same way, but any time I hear the words \u2018Big Sur\u2019 it sounds kind of magical to me\u2026 This is either because of reading too much Jack Kerouac as an impressionable teenager, or because the last (and only) time I was in Big Sur, we spent a magical 24 hours among giant redwoods, running down to the beach for sunset and passing a llama on the way (?) and then had to hitchhike back to civilization\u2026<\/p>\n<p>So it was with pretty high expectations that I returned to Big Sur last year. Luckily, they were exceeded. It is, quite simply, breathtakingly beautiful. Every twist and turn of the road reveals an even more extraordinary view, yet more stunning vistas with a bright blue ocean and staggering cliffs on all sides\u2026 Sunset in Big Sur (preferably with a bottle of wine and some cheese and biscuits) remains one of the most beautiful sunsets I\u2019ve seen.<\/p>\n<p>And camping here is a must. There are hotels, of course, and B&amp;Bs and probably chalets, but it\u2019s so wild and rugged that camping is the only real option, as far as I\u2019m concerned. That said, it\u2019s probably a good idea to book ahead \u2013 especially if you\u2019re going to be around during the popular summer months. We didn\u2019t book ahead and were lucky enough to get the very last camping spot at an amazing campsite \u2013 but the one before had told us they were booked up from 3 months before!<\/p>\n<p>While I\u2019m not usually the hugest fan of camping, when you\u2019re somewhere as vast and beautiful as Big Sur, with a canopy of twinkling stars and the crashing of the ocean just down the way, it seems a waste to cocoon yourself in a hotel room, with all those unnecessary lights and TV and mod cons\u2026 Where you end up isn\u2019t even as important as experiencing it in the first place: which might
