WestJet \u2013 Christmas Miracle<\/h2>\n<p><iframe src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/zIEIvi2MuEk\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\"><\/iframe><br \/>\nThis Canadian carrier really raised the game just before the end of the year with the \u2018WestJet Christmas Miracle: real-time giving\u2019 campaign. Currently it has more 34 000 000 views on YouTube and LiveLeak.com said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe video was uploaded onto YouTube on Sunday and depending on your seasonal cheer levels, it is either a heart-warming reminder of what Christmas is all about or a shameless attempt by an airline to milk the holidays for all they can in a shamelessly icky promo stunt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sorry LiveLeak but we\u2019re going to have to go with the former here. Congratulations to WestJet and Studio M for pulling off a Christmas campaign that tugged at the heartstrings of millions.<\/p>\n<h2>2. Lufthansa \u2013 Klaus Heidi<\/h2>\n<p><iframe src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/TL1bc32t3fU\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\"><\/iframe><br \/>\nIn a campaign that made our heads spin, the German national carrier put its austerity aside for a competition that asked: \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/klaus-heidi.se\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\">Are you Klaus-Heidi?<\/a>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The unusual qualifying rule \u2013 successful applicants would need to <strong>change their name to Klaus-Heidi<\/strong> \u2013 in a court of law (the official name change document was made available to download on the competition website).<\/p>\n<p>The (un)lucky winner gets a new life in Berlin including a:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>One way ticket to Berlin.<\/li>\n<li>An apartment for a whole year.<\/li>\n<li>And just about everything else you need to start a new life in one of Europe\u2019s most exciting cities.<\/li>\n<li>A new name \u2013 Klaus-Heidi.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>42 Swedes changed their names to Klaus-Heidi. But it was Klaus-Heidi Andersson from Fjugesta who won a new life in Berlin, starting January 2014.<\/p>\n<h2>3. Air New Zealand \u2013 Just another day in Middle-Earth<\/h2>\n<p><iframe src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/C7q7WFMuxsg\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\"><\/iframe><br \/>\nThe Kiwis have never been one\u2019s to shy away from clever marketing especially when it comes to their national carrier. Yes, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.travelstart.co.za\/lp\/airlines\/air-new-zealand\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Book cheap flights with Air New Zealand\">Air New Zealand <\/a>has become famous for its Hobbit inspired inflight safety videos but it was their \u2018Just another day in Middle-Earth\u2019 video that impressed us in 2013.<\/p>\n<p>For this stunt, the \u201cofficial carrier of Middle-Earth\u201d, featured real-life Air New Zealand flight attendants, pilots, aircraft engineers, an aircraft marshal, baggage handlers and airport staff.<\/p>\n<h2>4. Kulula \u2013 Most South African Flight\/ Most South African Airways<\/h2>\n<p><iframe src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ohMXHPatKME\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\"><\/iframe><br \/>\nThe <a href=\"http:\/\/www.travelstart.co.za\/lp\/airlines\/kulula-airlines\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Book cheap flights with Kulula\">Kulula <\/a>campaign, handled by King James, set social media abuzz with mostly positive chatter and a series of \u2018Most South African\u2019 stunts which included cleverly-doctored print ads, radio airtime and the \u2018Most South African Flight Ever\u2019 \u2013 where 189 individuals were chosen to board a flight from Lanseria to Lanseria.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.travelstart.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Kulula-Most-South-African-Airways.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-31462 alignleft\" title=\"Kulula 'Most South African Airways'\" src=\"https:\/\/www.travelstart.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Kulula-Most-South-African-Airways.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"444\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But it was the subsequent cruelly put together billboard that proved to be a thorn in the side of our national carrier who dubbed the campaign \u2018aggressive marketing\u2019 and went on to file an urgent complaint with the Advertising Standards Authority.<\/p>\n<h2>5. Virgin America \u2013 VX Safety Dance<\/h2>\n<p><iframe src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/DtyfiPIHsIg\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\"><\/iframe><br \/>\nAir travel safety is serious business, but it never hurts to inject some fun into the matter and Virgin America managed to do just that with an inflight safety video that mixed aircraft regulations with robot rap, contortionists and a nun.<\/p>\n<h2>6. KLM \u2013 Disney\u2019s Planes<\/h2>\n<p><iframe src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_8nTfVthkdw\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\"><\/iframe><br \/>\nLittle fans of the 2013 Disney movie \u2018Planes\u2019 got a day they would never forget when KLM invited them to a pre-screening of a different sort.<\/p>\n<p>While the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.travelstart.co.za\/lp\/airlines\/klm-airlines\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Book cheap flights on KLM airlines\">KLM <\/a>plane was parked in a hangar, the children watched the movie on the in-flight viewing screens. Throughout, they experienced the events of the film just as the characters did, with the help of some real-world special effects.<\/p>\n<h2>7. British Airways \u2013 Man vs Plane<\/h2>\n<p><iframe src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/P66ISniQCqY\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\"><\/iframe><br \/>\nIn a seemingly unfair pitting of SA rugby great Bryan Habana against BA\u2019s new A380 super-bird, the 100m race takes place on a runway and sees Habana racing the gargantuan Airbus from a dead stop. Although Habana slows to a stop, the super-jumbo rotates to complete a takeoff.<\/p>\n<p>While we felt this video could\u2019ve been executed better, it did well in drawing attention to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.travelstart.co.za\/lp\/airlines\/british-airways-comair\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Book cheap flights with British Airways\">British Airways\u2019<\/a> new A380 flights between Johannesburg and London (flights start February 2014).<\/p>\n<h2>8. KLM \u2013 Wanna Gives<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.travelstart.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/KLM-Wanna-Gives1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-31465\" title=\"KLM Wanna Gives\" src=\"https:\/\/www.travelstart.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/KLM-Wanna-Gives1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1060\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Once again the Dutch national carrier impressed with \u2018Wanna Gives\u2019 \u2013 probably the best example of social media\/real life integration we\u2019ve seen from an airline.<\/p>\n<p>From the <a href=\"https:\/\/wannagives.klm.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Wanna Gives microsite<\/a>, you can surprise your favourite traveller with a special party at 30,000 feet.
