SANParks 8\" width=\"780\" height=\"505\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>SANParks Does Good Work<\/h2>\n<p>SANParks\u00a0manages a collective of 19\u00a0National Parks\u00a0which represent the indigenous fauna, flora, varied landscape and cultural heritage of our\u00a0country.\u00a0They are set in areas of unrivalled beauty, be it\u00a0arid, coastal, mountain or\u00a0bushveld, ranging from world heritage sites to places of\u00a0natural biodiversity. Each holding the specific purpose of conserving the game, marine ecosystems and vegetation found in their region. It is significant work.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>&#8220;accessible and affordable&#8221;<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Nearly all have\u00a0overnight facilities which vary in style and level of luxury, perfect to make them accessible and affordable. Activities on offer are diverse and include game viewing (guided or self drive), bush walks, canoeing and lessons in conservation.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>&#8220;lesser known parks worthy of a visit&#8221;<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The best known park is the\u00a0<a title=\"Kruger National Park\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sanparks.co.za\/parks\/kruger\/\" target=\"_blank\">Kruger National Park<\/a>.\u00a0Proclaimed in 1898, it is the oldest\u00a0as well as\u00a0the largest at nearly 2 million. That&#8217;s a lot of European countries. As for the most popular, the Kruger Park and <a title=\"Table Mountain National Park\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sanparks.co.za\/parks\/table_mountain\/\">Table Mountain National Park<\/a> are South Africa&#8217;s most visited tourist attractions and it&#8217;s easy to see why. Yet, this is more about the unsung heros of the SANParks family, the <strong>lesser known\u00a0parks<\/strong>\u00a0worthy of a visit.<\/p>\n<h2>1. Bontebok National Park, Western Cape<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>&#8220;Perfect for a day visit, although it is wonderful to overnight here and watch the Bontebok grazing from your chalet window first thing in the morning.&#8221;<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-42372\" title=\"Bontebok National Park and its namesake\" src=\"https:\/\/www.travelstart.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Dawn-Jorgensen-Swellendam-Bontebok-National-Park-2.jpg\" alt=\"Dawn Jorgensen. SANParks 2\" width=\"497\" height=\"361\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"SANParks Bontebok National Park\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sanparks.co.za\/parks\/bontebok\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bontebok National Park<\/a>\u00a0is the smallest of the\u00a0SANParks and just gorgeous. Located on the banks of the Breede River just 5km from the town of Swellendam in the Western Cape. This places it within the Cape Floral Kingdom which\u00a0explains the rich floral offerings.\u00a0Perfect for a day visit, although it is wonderful to overnight here and watch the Bontebok grazing from your chalet window first thing in the morning.<\/p>\n<p>Accommodation is at\u00a0Lang Elsie&#8217;s Kraal rest camp, the first SANParks rest camp to be built according to a <em>Touching the Earth Lightly<\/em>\u00a0ecotourism design. Named after a Khoe-Khoe Chieftain who lived here with her clan in the 18th century. The camp has ten units and\u00a0provides pristine scenery towards the\u00a0Langeberg Mountains. There&#8217;s also a very good camping site.<\/p>\n<p>The park is home to 200 Bontebok and the formation of this park is known to have saved the species from extinction. Main attractions include other game such as Grey Rhebuck, red Hartebees and\u00a0many other smaller mammals. Enjoy a drive around the park, bird watching from the\u00a0viewing decks, or from one of the numerous picnic and braai areas.\u00a0On my\u00a0first visit I took one of the walking trails through the aloes and spring flowers, as well as a linger down at the Breede River. If the weather is warm enough, you can swim here or simply enjoy a nap on the sandbank.<\/p>\n<h2><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-42373\" title=\"Bontebok National Park, the road to the hiking trails.\" src=\"https:\/\/www.travelstart.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Dawn-Jorgensen-Swellendam-Bontebok-National-Park-4.jpg\" alt=\"Dawn Jorgensen. Mountain Zebra National Park, Eastern Cape<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>&#8220;On my first visit I arrived as the sun was softening on the land. About 5 minutes in a black rhino walked across the road right in front of us.&#8221;<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<section><\/section>\n<section><\/section>\n<section><\/section>\n<section>The 28 000 hectares <a title=\"SANParks Mountain Zebra National Park\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sanparks.org\/parks\/mountain_zebra\/default.php\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Mountain Zebra National Park<\/strong><\/a> is situated about 12km inland from the town of Cradock and is accessed off the R61 towards\u00a0Graaff-Reinet. Synonymous with the Great Karoo the air is crystal clear here, the scenery beautiful\u00a0and the setting\u00a0tranquil. This National Park was originally proclaimed in 1937 to save the dwindling Cape Mountain Zebra population\u00a0and\u00a0boasts a conservation success story which has it protecting over 700 zebra as well as the endangered black rhino and reintroduced cheetah.<\/section>\n<section><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-42376\" title=\"Mountain Zebra National Park. Cape Mountain Zebra.\" src=\"https:\/\/www.travelstart.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Screen-Shot-2015-08-06-at-5.24.31-PM.jpg\" alt=\"Dawn Jorgensen. SANParks 6\" width=\"609\" height=\"459\" \/>The fenced off Rest Camp is located about 12 kilometers from the entrance gate and offers comfortable family cottages, a campsite with communal facilities, a good restaurant and a shop. There is also a guesthouse and two mountain cottages further into the Park. The Rest Camp cottages are a short walk from the restaurant, which allows a good chance for star-gazing after dinner.<\/section>\n<p>Activities in the park include self-drive and guided game viewing on the 70km of mapped out roads. Visit the San-cave paintings or enjoy the two short self-hike trails within the fenced Rest\u00a0Camp; the Black Eagle Trail of 2.5km is a more challenging climb to the top of the rocky outcrop with spectacular views over the Park while the Imbila Trail 1 km is an easy, flat trail. Also recommended is the guided Cheetah Trekking (see the video at the bottom of the page) which can be booked on arrival, a very special experience which heightens all senses.\u00a0Day visitors are welcome and there are a couple of good picnic sites in the park where you can stop for lunch.<\/p>\n<p>On my first visit I arrived as the sun was softening on the land. Located\u00a0in the\u00a0untouched foothills of the magnificent Maluti Mountains,\u00a0the <strong><a title=\"SANParks Golden Gate\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sanparks.org\/parks\/golden_gate\/\" target=\"_blank\">Golden Gate Highlands National Park<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0is named from the sun that catches the sandstone cliffs. The most impressive being Brandwag rock, which simply must be climbed.<\/p>\n<p>This 11 600 hectares showcases\u00a0true highland habitat\u00a0and provides a safe environment for the\u00a0black wildebeest, eland, blesbok, oribi, springbok and Burchell&#8217;s zebra. Look out for the rare bearded vulture and bald ibis too. Ribbokkop is the highest point in the park\u00a0and can be hiked to with a guide.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Golden Gate Hotel offers assorted luxury accommodation and has excellent facilities, their fireplace is\u00a0a\u00a0perfect place for cold winter nights.\u00a0The nearby Glen Reenen Rest Camp has more affordable\u00a0rondavels and guest cottages\u00a0and for those wanting to be out in nature there is a\u00a0good camping site.<\/p>\n<p>Things to do include a visit to the Van Reenen family graveyard, which has some incredible angels on guard.\u00a0A hike up the\u00a0Brandwag\u00a0mountain\u00a0and\u00a0visits to the various\u00a0lookout points. Numerous walking\u00a0trails\u00a0and\u00a0horse riding. Whilst there listen for the call of the baboons through the wind.<\/p>\n<h2>4. West Coast National Park, Western Cape<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>&#8220;this place is idyllic&#8221;<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"lede\">Perfect for\u00a0easy day trips from Cape Town specifically to see the spring flowers. Located just\u00a0inland from the Langebaan Lagoon, the <a title=\"SANParks West Coast\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sanparks.org\/parks\/west_coast\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>West Coast National Park<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0is home to thousands of seabirds,\u00a0sheltered islands and untouched beaches. During spring the\u00a0land turns into a rich\u00a0tapestry of wild flowers, often scattered with resident\u00a0antelope.<\/p>\n<p class=\"lede\">For accommodation look to\u00a0Abrahamskraal self catering cottage and\u00a0the Duinepos chalets, there are even houseboats available for hire. The Geelbek restaurant offers an excellent option for lunch.<\/p>\n<p class=\"lede\">Main attractions include flowers season in Postberg between August and September, a visit to Eve&#8217;s footprint and walking trails, driving to the 16 mile beach and taking in the various viewpoints across the lagoon. Cycling and mountain biking, whale watching in season, bird watching and the numerous walking trails. Kgalagadi Gemsbok National Park<\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>&#8220;the\u00a0camp is unfenced and\u00a0lion\u00a0and hyena literally pass through at night&#8221;<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"lede\">Bordering Botswana and Namibia where the red dunes appear\u00a0to go on forever, is the spectacular\u00a0<a title=\"SANParks Kgalagadi\" href=\"http:\/\/www.sanparks.org\/parks\/kgalagadi\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Kgalagadi Transfrontier National Park<\/strong><\/a>. Coming into existence with the amalgamation of South Africa&#8217;s\u00a0Kalahari Gemsbok National Park and Botswana&#8217;s\u00a0Gemsbok National Park, the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park has an area of\u00a0over 3,6 million hectares, making it one of the greatest conservation sites in the world.<\/p>\n<p>Best known for its gemsbok, curious meerkats, black-maned Kalahari lions and sociable weavers (who weigh down telephone poles and trees with their giant nests). You may even find a lone camel on the land. Here the sparse vegetation and dry riverbeds provide a dream backdrops for photographers.<\/p>\n<p>There is accommodation in the\u00a0three main camp rest camps, namely\u00a0Twee Rivieren Rest Camp,\u00a0Mata-Mata Rest Camp\u00a0and\u00a0Nossob Rest Camp,\u00a0which offer a combination of chalets and camping facilities. Although I highly suggest the Kalahari Tented Camp\u00a0which is situated high up on a sand dune that overlooks a waterhole in the ancient dry Auob River. The\u00a0camp is unfenced and\u00a0lion\u00a0and hyena literally pass through at night, adding a different\u00a0dimension\u00a0to the experience.<\/p>\n<p>Activities include self-guided\u00a0game drives as well as guided drives and walks by arrangement. Stock up prior to arriving just in case.<\/li>\n<li>Best thing you can do for yourself and your family is get a <a title=\"SanParks WildCard\" href=\"https:\/\/www2.sanparks.org\/wild_new\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>WILDCARD<\/strong><\/a>. Wild Card Membership gives you <strong>unlimited access<\/strong> to most of the country&#8217;s\u00a0premier conservation areas. Well worth looking into. After all, discounts for South Africans, when did\u00a0we ever say no to that?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>SANParks<b> <\/b>certainly do<b>\u00a0<\/b>continue to meet all expectations with their collection of reserves well\u00a0kept\u00a0and proudly managed.<\/p>\n<p>Personally, I&#8217;ve made it my mission to visit as many of the SANParks as possible and encourage everybody in our beautiful country to do the same.
