Some commercial airlines already are.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s take stock of the airlines who have so far given the green light to this controversial course of action.<\/p>\n<p><em>For the purpose of this brief analysis we have focused on commercial carriers operating scheduled services only. Charter services and \u201clodge hoppers\u201d have been left out.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Uzbekistan Airways<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-46919 alignleft\" title=\"Uzbekistan Airways\" src=\"https:\/\/www.travelstart.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Uzbekistan-Airways.jpg\" alt=\"In 2015 Uzbekistan Airways announced that all passengers will have to stand on weighing machines with their personal luggage after they have checked in.\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In August 2015 Uzbekistan Airways, the flag carrier of Uzbekistan, announced they would join an exclusive club of airlines who charge passengers according to how much their person weighs. The airline says their passengers will be weighed on scales in airport departure zones.<\/p>\n<p>The airline says: \u201cThe weighing record will only contain the corresponding passenger category (i.e. male\/female\/children). As for the rest, the full confidentiality of results is guaranteed.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Samoa Air<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-46920\" title=\"Samoa Air\" src=\"https:\/\/www.travelstart.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Samoa-Air.jpg\" alt=\"In 2013 Samoa Air gained global press coverage by becoming the first airline in the world to charge customers by body weight plus luggage.\" width=\"1536\" height=\"1007\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In 2012, Samoa Air famously introduced a pay-as-you-weigh fare structure \u2013 they are largely credited as the airline who opened the weight debate and if a message on their website is anything to go by, they\u2019re proud of their policy.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-46918\" title=\"Samoa Air official website\" src=\"https:\/\/www.travelstart.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Samoa_Air_Pay_By_Weight.png\" alt=\"Samoa Air's pay-by-weight policy.\" width=\"1095\" height=\"245\" \/><\/p>\n<p>However, when you take a look at Samoa Air\u2019s fleet which is comprised of lightweight Cessna\u2019s and Britten-Norman Islander aircraft and couple that with a nation with one of the highest obesity rates in the world, their so-called \u201cfat tax\u201d begins to make more sense.<\/p>\n<p>Insensitivity aside, there are some valid for and against arguments here.<\/p>\n<p>In the \u201cfor\u201d corner is Samoa Air who say, \u201cBy knowing your weight we can make arrangements for the best seat for you and your ease of travel and if we can get you more leg room and a more spacious seating then we will. We weigh everything. We don\u2019t use \u201cstandard weights\u201d we use real weights. Real weights are for real people. Aircraft can only provide a certain amount of weight on each and every sector for us to sell, so our commodity is weight!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The International Air Transport Association (IATA) response to the matter is neither for nor against saying, \u201cAll airlines have policies in place for load calculations, weight and balance of their aircraft. These policies in turn are subject to the rules and regulations of their national aviation regulator.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Those with <em>Schadenfreude<\/em><em> tendencies simply say, \u201c<\/em>It takes more fuel\u2014more energy\u2014to get more weight from point A to point B. So why should I pay the same as the guy twice my weight sitting next to me with much of his body hanging over into my seat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some airlines have chosen a more subtle approach to the subject. Southwest Airlines has a \u201ccustomers of size\u201d policy whereby physically larger passengers are required to purchase a second seat if they don\u2019t fit between the armrests of a single seat.<\/p>\n<p>Are there any other airlines charging passengers based on how much they weigh?
