1. The Ice Café in Kalk Bay
The best summer ritual is catching the train to Kalk Bay, then crossing the street and visiting the beautifully old-fashioned Ice café facing the station. Their generous scoops of Turkish Delight or Amarula flavours are my personal favourites at this Kalk Bay institution however they have an ever-changing range especially in the summer months. Their hall of fame includes a photograph of Jamie Oliver enjoying a cone on the bench outside the shop. Trains rattling along by the seaside, laughter and ice cream from Ice café create incredible memories. Around R19.50 for one scoop and R24.50 for a double scoop. 93 Main Road. 021 788 4816
2. The Creamery at Mouille Point

Toasted coconut, sea salt caramel, granadilla chocolate chip, peanut butter, and basil and strawberry- the list of unusual and delicious flavours is as extensive as the seasonal produce on offer. This is GOOD ice cream made with fresh ingredients and a conscience. R34 a scoop. Get a take home tub to share with the whole family for R85 for 500 ml. Enjoy their latest addition to the creamery family- the shop by the lighthouse in Mouille Point. 163 Beach Road, opposite the Maze. 3. Dairy-free ice cream at Honest Chocolate
For the lactose intolerant among us Honest Chocolate offers scoops of heavenly dairy-free ice cream. You will feel as if you are in a Parisian café in this stylish ode-to-chocolate with a secret gin bar at the back. R40. 076 765 8306. 64 A Wale Street.
4. Real Deal Italian Gelato at Ice Dream in Hout Bay

Visit Ice Dream in Hout Bay for real Italian ice-cream made the old fashioned way by Fabrizio. Don’t miss out on their famous Stracciatella. R22 for a small cup or cone. 021 790 2496. Mainstream Shopping Centre, Hout Bay.
5. Gelato Mania in Green Point
The giant luminous Gelato Mania sign is a beacon along Green Point main road. Their most popular flavours include After 8 mint, Bar One, Mango and Chocolate Hazlenut. R27.90 a scoop. R48.80 for two scoops. They also have diabetic options. 021914 6376. 65 Main Road Green Point. Open everyday until 10pm this is the perfect spot for an post-movie dessert.
6. The Nice Company

This is the place to buy tubs of preservative-free creamy goodness. Apricot cheesecake is one of their more unusual flavour offerings. My personal favourites are the salted peanut butter and the butterscotch.

7. The Science of Ice Cream at N2ice Cream Lab, Parklands
Have your ice cream with a side of science and be prepared to be wowed by N2ice Cream Lab. Using a dessert freezing technique popularized by ultimate science-meets-cuisine chef Heston Blumenthal you can have individual ice cream made in 60 seconds. The also have banting ice cream. Choose your flavour base, then your fun mix followed triumphantly by your choice of topping. 084 516 1818. The Emporium Centre, Sandown Road, Parkland. About R40 pp.
8. DV Artisan chocolate at the Spice Route

If you fancy a lovely weekend drive in the country why not stop in at Spice Route near Paarl and indulge in some premium ice cream delights at DV Artisan Chocolate. The chocolate flavour is beyond delicious as is the vanilla bean. Open 9am to 5pm seven days a week. 021 863 0854.
9. Sorbetière, Woodstock
They sell both high-quality sorbet and traditional ice cream with emphasis on the freshest ingredients and everything made from scratch. Even their cones are hand rolled. Love their coffee ice cream and their melon sorbet just tastes of summer and is ideal if you’re lactose-intolerant. New flavours include Tonka bean ice cream and their famous strawberry sorbet. You can taste their ice cream at numerous restaurants around the city including Quaglinos in Mouille Point and Honest Chocolate in the CBD. 10. Sinnfull Ice Cream, Hout Bay
Sweet and velvety, Sinnful Ice Cream is a Hout Bay-Harbour-weekend must. I love the vanilla cookie dough but there are several wonderful flavours from which to choose and friendly service. Open from Friday to Sunday, 11am to 6pm. 2 Harbour Road. 021 300 2775. R15 for a scoop, R25 for two scoops, R35 for three.
