After all that planning, we finally set off this morning from Travelstart’s offices. The long N1 lay ahead of us. After ensuring our tummies were properly provided for, thanks to a handy steers at Worcester, we set off down the legendary Route 62! Breezing through the likes of Montagu and Robertson, we made the mandatory stop at Ronnie’s Sex Shop. For those of you now thinking that Travelstarters spend their time in seedy dives, think again, Ronnie’s is the famous pub located in the remoter part of the Klein Karoo, renowned for its hoards of passing bikers and of course, that sign, which you just have to be photographed in front of. See our Flickr page for pics!
From there it was the long slog through to Oudtshoorn and on to the Cango Caves with the windy road leading to it filled with picturesque vistas. Once at the caves, our day of sitting around staring at the tarmac took a dramatic turn! We opted for the adventure tour, an hour and a half of excitement with some pretty incredible sights and experiences.
We found ourselves in grand chambers deep within the mountain, covered with the most intricate stalagmites and stalactites, our guide Lee-Anne was all too happy to explain their every cause to us and gave us a special treat by singing in the most incredible voice in one of the main halls to show how incredible the acoustics were.
From there we proceeded on to post ourselves through the letter-box (a slit only a few inches wide), ascend the devil’s chimney (a near vertical tunnel) and squeeze ourselves through the tunnel of love (a narrow 10m long passage-way only passable when travelling sideways). All in all, although it seemed a pretty daunting experience, it was well worth it, I would recommend this to anyone with even the smallest adventurous bone in their body!
Tomorrow, we are off to George and Knysna, looking forward to meeting some of our supporters at George airport between 10am and 2pm!
