Giant's Castle Nature Reserve – KwaZulu Natal National Parks and Reserves

Historic Giant’s Castle Game Reserve is home to the eland and the majestic bearded vulture in the Central Drakensberg region of the Ukhahlamba Drakensberg Park (which is a World Heritage Site).

Giant’s Castle camp is situated on a grassy plateau among the deep valleys running down from the face of the High Drakensberg.

Giant’s Castle has an abundance of bird life and as the chalets are tucked into the mountainside, you can enjoy bird watching from your own private patio.

The Champagne Pools are also worth a visit.  These are beautiful pools are in the valley running through Giant’s Castle. You need to drive to the pools as they are a few kilometres from the entrance gate. The water is a bit chilly during the winter months, but you can enjoy a swim in the clear mountain water of the Bushmans River while appreciating the fantastic setting.

The Bearded Vulture, of which only 204 pairs still exist in South Africa, is found in the uKhahlamba-Drakensberg and Maluti Mountains.  There is a hide, from where you can view the vultures inconspi.jpgcuously, it is open between May 1 and

You can also appreciate the San Rock Art which is in the Main Caves and are an easy 45-minute walk from the chalets.  There are over 35 000 rock art images created by the San. There is also a guide from the local community that offers tours every hour on the hour.
