Mama Tembo's, African restaurant – Johannesburg

I accidentally discovered this African restaurant, Mama Tembo’s, in Rivonia, Johannesburg. The restaurant is in Rivonia Junction center (across from McDonalds) next to Rivonia Rd.

The menu:
The menu has quite a few interesting items on – Winnie’s veggie platter, Mandela’s meat platter… and many more new items. When you order, you get a "bread basket" with a difference. The basket is a tin plate, with deep fried dough (almost like vetkoek, but smaller and crispi.jpger) and a tomato and onion salsa like dip.

The decor:
Iconic African brands adorn the chairs, tables and walls – Marmite,Glenryck Pilchards, Huletts sugar, Lion matches… The decor is colorful and bright, but not  overdone. If you are in the vicinity, at least go and have a look at th bar with its unique bar chairs.

On Tuesdays & Thursdays Ant has Salsa classes for beginners @ R40 per person (starting from 19:30) behind glass doors in a small hall.

  1. Its the place that shouldn`t be allowed to open its doors to the public.People working there are abused by the owner who is addicted to gambling and cocain. This so called restaurant is infested with mice, rats and cockroaches as he doesnt keep his place clean. If a customer doesn`t finish a juice he sells it again to someone else.He doesnt even pay his monthly rent so he keeps running away from his landlords by opening his white shabeen in various places. He owes money to many people and is well connected with criminals.I know this as I used to work for him.He should be kept behind bars!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • I understand that the authorities closed down the establishment in JHB. The trade name was acquired by new owners who opened in Seapoint, CAPE TOWN. The Cape Town restaurant is definitely much more upmarket with light, bright finishes, classy African background rhythms and cuisine to die for!
