Dialogue in the Dark: Sci-Bono, Newtown’s New Must “See” Exhibition

Dialogue in the Dark

I was lucky enough to be invited to the opening of Sci-Bono’s Dialogue in the Dark a few weeks ago. I had heard that it was amazing but nothing can prepare you for this experience.

You enter a completely darkened world, guided only by a white stick, your other senses and most importantly a blind or partially sighted guide. He or she then takes you through numerous carefully constructed daily environments where you will experience sound, wind, temperatures and textures. Your guide aids you in moving through this completely pitch black world, helping you to identify each of these environments. At first you feel really nervous and unsure, but as the experience progresses and you get more used to your environment and guide, that’s when the fun really starts. The experience lasts about 45 minutes and believe me you don’t want it to end. I don’t want to give you too much detail and spoil the surprise but a small hint: take some cash for a very different kind of café.

Our guide Junaid was absolutely amazing and it really was a “Dialogue in the Dark” as he kept asking us questions about our environment and encouraged us to ask him any questions about what life is like for a blind person.

Dialogue in the Dark has travelled to over 30 countries, has been viewed by 6.5 million people and provided employment for 6000 blind people which makes it more than just some fun. The exhibition has been bought to the City of Jozi by the South African Council for the Blind and Sci-Bono Centre assisted with funding by the National Lottery.

My advice: get to Dialogue in the Dark as soon as possible. It is amazing and will completely change the way you see your city and the blind community. It is also the perfect outing for any age group, so get some friends together and get there now.
