Welcome to another edition of Travelstart’s FAQ Friday with me, Nick Paul. This week we are talking about sailing holidays in the Mediterranean – a great destination to go visit on a sailing holiday with beautiful coastlines, beautiful towns, villages and of course beautiful calm waters. So let’s look at 3 of the best sailing destinations in the Mediterranean.
Croatia
Croatia is a great destination since it is a little bit more untouched than the other destinations that we are going to be focusing on. Here, you will sail for around 8 days from Split to Dubrovnik or vice versa and you will stop off at incredible islands like Mljet, Vis, Korčula or Hvar.
Greece
Greece is a very popular sailing destination. Most trips will be around 8 to 15 days depending on how many islands you want to go and see. The shorter ones will always include Santorini and Mykonos and some of the longer trips will also include islands like Naxos, Paros, Sifnos, Syros and so on.
Turkey
Most of the time, people will travel Turkey on Gulets. Gulets are the traditional Turkish sailing boats. A lot of the trips that we sell will also go on Catamarans which are a little bit wider. The sailing trips will go for about 10 days from Bodrum to Fethiye stopping off at a number of beautiful places along the coast of Turkey such as Datça (famous for its windsurfing), Marmaris, Dalyan (great for ancient ruins) and Gőcek.
Best time to sail the Mediterranean
Most of these trips will operate during the European summer which is from May to October.
Accommodation style
Most of the boats that you will be on will be 15 metre yachts with 4 double or twin bedrooms, 3 shared toilets and 3 showers. In Turkey you can be on a catamaran, which is quite a bit wider but only 12 metres long, and here you will also find 4 double or twin bedrooms, 4 shared toilets and 3 showers. Most of the boats will sleep only a maximum of 8 people on the trips that we sell. There are also some lower budget trips which will sleep a few more people which you can inquire about.
2015 pricing
Usually you will spend around R1900 per person per night which will be on a sharing basis for the good quality boats. The cheaper boats may have lower rates but you will have to inquire about those. As mentioned, the trips usually range from 8 to 15 days so simply multiply the R1900 by the number of days and you should get the amount that you are going to be spending.
