Founded in 1537, Asunción declared independence from Spain in 1811. You’ll love exploring the historic centre on foot where you can visit Panteon Nacional de los Heroes, Casa de la Independencia and Catedral de Nuestra Senora de Asuncion. Often referred to as the “Mother of Cities”, Asunción is the capital of Paraguay and the gateway to the grassy Gran Chaco region. The city has long been a hub of music, poetry and the arts, but it’s only recently that Asunción is emerging from a long history of dictator rulership.
Served by Silvio Pettirossi International Airport, Asunción offers a heady blend of culture and tradition, with a number of museums, galleries, historical landmarks and other places of interest. For travellers seeking a somewhat rarer South American destination, a treasure trove of travel memories awaits.

Visa Requirements & SA Embassy Details

  • Paraguay Tourist Visa is not required for citizens of South Africa for a stay up to 90 days. All travellers will need a passport valid for at least 90 days following your departure date from Paraguay. However, we strongly recommend traveling with 6 months validity on your passport at all times. We recommend that you have at least two free pages in Visas section of your passport before any international travel. Check with your airline in case you have connecting flights overseas as part of your journey to Paraguay. It may be the case that countries you pass through en route to your destination may require a separate transit visa.
  • The South African Consulate is situated at Asuncion Fulgencio R. Moreno 509, Piso 8, Asunción. Phone: +595 21 441 971.

See and do

Attractions include major landmarks such as Paraguay River, Citibank Tower, Cabildo of Asunción, National Pantheon of the Heroes and Palacio de los López, along with an array of cultural, historical and scenic highlights too. We recommend checking out the Godoi Museum, the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, Church of La Encarnación, Metropolitan Cathedral, Casa de la Independencia, Manzana de la Rivera, Municipal Theater, Paraguayan-Japanese Center, Juan de Salazar Cultural Center, Americas Theater and Iglesia de la Santísima Trinidad to name but a few.
Shopping caters to all tastes, and if you’re keen for high-end designer shopping, you’re in luck. Malls include Shopping del Sol, Mariscal López Shopping, Shopping Villa Morra and Mall Excelsior. There is a very hectic market called Mercado 4 that sells everything under the sun (sometimes poorly made or counterfeit), and shopping areas such as Palma Street. Look out for tooled leather goods, carved wood, pottery, Paraguayan lace known as Ñanduti and local curios at places such as Plaza de los Heroes.
Public transport comprises buses that reach all regions of the city, as well as trains, ferries (mostly for longer distance trips if you want to get out of the city and explore), as well as self-drive options such as car or bike rental. For the most part, it is easy to get where you need to go, and buses are your best bet as they’re often available. You can walk around most parts of the city too if you’re in the mood to stay active – it’s a nice way to appreciate the many beautiful buildings in Asunción.
