See and do

Florianopolis is largely a beach holiday destination so it’s not surprising there’s a healthy total of 42 beaches to explore. Next to Florianopolis’s beautiful beaches there’s historical landmarks and a good dose of Brazilian culture. For beaches, try options such as Campeche Island, Lagoinha do Leste, Matadeiro beach, Barra da Lagoa and Joaquina beach. Fill yourself in on the region’s history by paying a visit to historical hotspots such as Santa Cruz de Anhatomiri fort, Teatro Álvaro de Carvalho, Velha Figueira and the Ethnological Museum. You should also stop past the lake of Lagoa da Conceição if you can.
Shopping offers something for everyone. Try out the Municipal Market (also a historical landmark), or hit one of the glitzy shopping stops such as Av. Beiramar Norte, Floripa Shopping or Iguatemi Florianópolis. Things to buy range from amazing sustainable items from speciality shops like Tuktuk Mamamuk; unique once-off finds at the market; high end luxury goods from the malls; bikinis straight from beach vendors and surfing gear.
Public transport is busy and easy to use. There are buses that do routes across the island to various beaches, throughout the day. Sometimes however, you may need to do a transfer depending on where you are headed. There are more expensive yellow buses also available, which have air-conditioning as an added bonus. You could also hire a car to get around.
