Known as Pietersburg before 2002, Polokwane, meaning “Place of Safety”, is the capital city of the province of Limpopo in Northern South Africa. It is a bustling and bubbly city surrounded by tree-lined suburbs, charming townships and rural villages.
Polokwane has become very popular as a tourist destination because it is the centre of the hunting industry in Limpopo and is home to many provincial and private game lodges and hunting farms such as the Kruger National Park, known as the conservation jewel of Southern Africa. The Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park is another wonder, linking the Kruger National Park in South Africa, the Limpopo National Park in Mozambique and the Gonarezhou National Park, Manjinji Pan Sanctuary and the Malipati Safari Area in Zimbabwe, allowing animals, especially elephants to follow old migratory routes.

See and do

Polokwane lives up to its name, as it has one of the lowest crime-rates in South Africa, as well as having some of the best schools and medical facilities. It is one of the fastest-growing cities in the southern hemisphere and a city rich with cultural history and a plethora of languages spoken by the locals. It offers many attractions such as museums, historical sites such as the Voortrekker Monument and the Concentration Camp cemetery.
If you are a pacifist and not into hunting, fear not, as there are many opportunities for you to rather view wildlife and shoot only with a camera at the Polokwane Game Reserve. The game reserve is home to around 21 species, including sable antelope, giraffe, and white rhino, and offers a number of walks. It is also home to the Moletjie Bird Sanctuary, home of the Cape Vulture, one of the largest raptors in Africa. The Cave of Hearths in the Makapansgat Valley gives us an indication as to the origin of Man, and the Mapungubwe National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, contains the ruins of a sophisticated Iron Age Kingdom.
Polokwane is a city of contrasts, as most of South Africa is, and you can find imported Italian shoes sold virtually right next to local Venda curios and attire. There are many malls and shopping centres as well as roadside kiosks, creating a shopaholics dream.
Public transport is good, as it is throughout the rest of South Africa, with buses, trains, taxis and minibus-taxis available to get around.

Polokwane International Airport – PTG

Polokwane International Airport (code PTG), formerly Pietersburg International Airport or Gateway International Airport, serves the city of Polokwane in the province of Limpopo. It also serves as a hub for flights to and from Zimbabwe and Botswana. It opened on the site of a former air base in 1996 and has regular scheduled flights to Johannesburg every day.
Although the airport is billed as an international airport, it is tiny and facilities are not great. There is a tiny restaurant, but it is better to wait until you get to the city if you want to eat; coffee or a soft drink is not a problem though.
