The lively Costa Rican capital was built on the profits of the coffee trade and working "golden bean" plantations still surround the city. Try freshly roasted local beans at Mercado Central. For shinier gold, visit the Museo del Oro. Many renovated landmarks now house stylish hotels. Usually viewed as a hub, rather than a destination, nightlife is concentrated in Spanish village-inspired El Pueblo. Don't miss the elegant 1897 National Theater.

See and do

San Jose’s main attractions are rich and fascinating – from the beautiful, lush parks and gardens to the ornate theatres and European style buildings; interesting museums and landmarks and inviting culture. Theatres to see include the National Theatre of Costa Rica, Melico Salazar Theatre and National Auditorium of The Children's Museum of Costa Rica. Museums include the National Museum of Costa Rica, Children's Museum, Museum of Pre-Columbian Gold and the Museum of Contemporary Art and Design. Parks and natural attractions meanwhile include Parque Nacional, Morazán Park and the Temple of Music, San José Central Park, Peace Park and Parque Okayama. Simón Bolivar Zoo, La Plaza de La Cultura and La Sabana Metropolitan Park are also worth a visit.
Shopping is sure to impress retail enthusiasts of all tastes. For locally made curios and items, try the Mercado Central (central market) - hand-painted ceramics, carved miniature ox-carts and of course coffee beans are the best goodies to take home. You can also try Mall San Pedro, Plaza Rohrmoser and Terramall for their variety of stores and products. You will find many imported goods from greater South America at shops in San Jose – you can even get Cuban cigars from shops such as The Havana Humidor Room near the Holiday Inn downtown.
Public transport is still being developed and can be a bit confusing due to the lack of street signs in most of the city (this is however being upgraded along with a potential future tram system). There are buses operated by private companies which run across the city throughout the day and evening. There are some trains that run across Costa Rica as well, and then there are taxis that also form part of the transport network. Red taxis are registered state operated taxis – orange/yellow ones are privately owned and not registered (good to know as prices may vary for each type).
