São Luís is the state capital of Maranhão and the largest city in the region of Brazil. Founded in 1612 by the French, other foreign colonial settlers include the Dutch and the Portuguese.
Retaining its more significant Portuguese influences, the city’s well preserved distinctive azulejo (tiles) walls and the cobblestone streets in the historic heart of the city have UNESCO World Heritage Site status.
This capital city is situated on São Luís Island (Ilha de São Luís) in the São Marcos Bay which is an expansion of the Atlantic Ocean. The bay shapes the estuaries of the rivers Pindaré, Mearim, Itapecuru.
São Luís is also host to a large number of Brazilian folkloric traditions such as the festive pantomime bumba-meu-boi held in June, and the off-season Carnical – Marafolia.

The Palácio dos Leões built in the 18th century is worth a visit for the great number of valuable antique furnishings and art housed here, mostly of 18th century French influence.
