Discover Durbanville Wine Valley, A Stone’s Throw From The City

De Grendel view Durbanville

Just 20 km from Cape Town CBD you’ll find yourself in another world completely. The Durbanville Wine Valley may not be as well known as Franschhoek or Stellenbosch, however the 12 estates which make up the route offer a range of characterful, boutique experiences. After a mere 20 minutes drive from city skyscrapers you’re among rolling green hills, gardens of lavender and wine farms with unique stories to share.

The Durbanville Valley, known as Pampoenkraal in 1801 (from the Dutch pampoen meaning pumpkin, and kraal meaning an enclosure for livestock) is famous for its spectacular Sauvignon Blanc due to the very fresh sea breeze that cools down the vineyards. Every October the valley celebrates a “Season of Sauvignon” culminating in a festival, held from the 29 to 30 October this year.

Expect close to cellar prices and authentic hospitality. Lunch at little-known gem Phizantekraal, blend your very own wine at Durbanville Hills Wine Estate, marvel at the spectacular Table Mountain view at De Grendel and test your mettle on the mountain bike tracks at Meerendal.

Our Readers Comments

  1. I believe there is another wine farm in the Durbanville area which has’t been mentioned….apparently next to Meerendal …..almost opposite Signal Gun. Do you know the name perhaps? Thanks

Have something to say...
