Does it Snow in South Africa in Winter?

Yes. And not just a little powder on pavements. Between June and August, high-altitude regions can get full-on alpine realness. Snowfall predictions for South Africa in 2025 are already looking promising, with several cold fronts expected to hit mid-July.

While snow isn’t an everyday event unless you’re up a mountain, the potential for snowfall is very real. Remember the massive cold front in July 2024? KZN got blanketed in snow and Joburg even flirted with flurries for a few magical minutes. And the 2025 season? It’s already started. Early June brought light snowfall to parts of the Drakensberg and Lesotho, with more on the radar according to current forecasts.

Will there be snow in Johannesburg or Cape Town in 2025?

It is a well known fact that Johannesburg and Cape Town weathers have a mind of their own. Could be raining one minute and snowing the next or go from cloudy grey skies to perfect sunshine. So, who knows? But looking at Johannesburg’s temperatures lately, a few minutes of snow is highly possible in 2025.
