Health & Safety

Make sure you receive all the routine vaccinations before you depart for Asunción. Additionally, depending on what you do while in the city, you may need to take precautions against additional diseases, such as hepatitis A and typhoid (both are transmitted through contaminated food and water). Hepatitis B is spread through sexual contact, contaminated needles and blood products, so practise safe sex and be careful when having medical procedures performed or receiving tattoos and piercings. If you are accompanying children, keep them from interacting with animals outside, as there is a risk of getting rabies if bitten. There is a risk of getting the mosquito-borne diseases of yellow fever, dengue and malaria in Asunción, so make sure you’re protected against mosquito bites at all times.

When travelling on the bus, hold on to your valuables to avoid becoming a victim of pick-pocketing. When walking out on the street, even in daytime, watch out for two men on a motorcycle. The passenger at the back typically jumps off to steal bags and other items from unwary victims. Be careful when crossing the road, as most drivers do not obey the stop signs and pedestrian crossings.

If you’re in the central area, try to avoid the police. There have been reports of officers asking tourists for their passports, and then demanding a payment to get it back. If you cannot avoid the police, make sure you have a copy of your passport to avoid becoming a victim.
