Best time to visit Bora Bora

The island of Bora Bora is a dream destination any time of the year, but if you’re someone who prefers less rain and humidity then it might be best to visit during the peak season of winter, from June to August. As it is peak tourist season you will find that your flights and accommodation on the island can be very pricey. The summer season of Bora Bora is a lot more tropical. There are plenty of rain showers and humidity, but the sun is always around with temperatures that average about 30°C. This period is also when you find the most budget-friendly deals so, for cheap flights to Bora Bora consider visiting between December and February, during the wet season.

Visa & Customs

South Africans who wish to visit Bora Bora in the French Polynesia will need a visa to do so. To complete your application, you will need to ensure that your passport is valid for three months after your return date and that you have three blank pages in it for stamps. Bora Bora is very safe to visit. The locals and resort staff are friendly and accommodating and you could easily sleep with your doors and windows open. There have been a few instances of petty theft in the past so perhaps keep your expensive belongings in the hotel safe.

There are a number of beautiful resorts and hotels available on Bora Bora, though the island is quite small (29 km²). The prices have been known to be quite pricey but Bora Bora is known for its exclusivity, so don’t be surprised by the amount of money that can be spent!

Getting Around

To get around Bora Bora you will need to use the local boat shuttles that operate within and around the various resorts. There are also local taxis, an irregular local bus that goes into the local city of Vaitape and bicycles that are cheaper to hire outside of the resorts than in them.
