Kaohsiung experiences a tropical savannah climate with hot summers and cool winters. The summer season spans from June to September and is Kaohsiung’s hottest period of the year, with temperatures reaching the mid-30s and high levels of humidity. Winter time (December to March) is the most popular time for visiting, due to lower, moderate temperatures and low rainfall. The ideal time to visit Kaohsiung would either be during autumn (between October and December) or spring (between April and June). During these times the temperatures are pleasantly warm and tourist crowds are significantly smaller than during summer and winter periods. Hotels and restaurants also charge off-season rates so take advantage of the great deals!

South Africans do require a visa to enter Taiwan. Leave plenty of time for the visa application process. Ensure your passport is valid and will remain valid for at least six months after the duration of your intended stay. Leave at least 3 passport pages blank for visa stamps.

Kaohsiung enjoys an extremely low crime-rate owing to its well-mannered locals as well as harsh sentences for criminals. Physical and violent crime is unheard of, especially against foreigners. That being said, petty crime in the city does occur, so remain vigilant of your surroundings and keep a close eye on personal possessions. Pick-pocketing and bag snatching can occur in busy centres, so keep your valuables safe.

Kaohsiung’s public transport is safe, affordable and efficient to use! The easiest and fastest way to travel around the city is on the local metro/subway system. The subway runs on two lines that stop at various stations throughout the city. The trains are clean and extremely safe, and signage is in Mandarin and English. Taxis operate throughout the city and run on a metre. Taxi drivers in Kaohsiung are extremely honest and usually never try to overcharge tourists. Some private taxis do tours around Kaohsiung at a fixed price. Bicycle hire is also extremely popular, and cycling the city streets while taking in the sights is a pleasant experience.
