Frequently asked questions

Overview

Located 20km from the coast and 100km south of Taipei, Taichung is the third largest city in Taiwan and is recognised as a major manufacturing hub. While the temples, markets, parks and museums of Taichung are a favourite among visiting tourists, perhaps what the city is most well-known for is Bubble Tea!

Don’t miss the remarkable National Museum of Fine Arts, boasting the biggest collection of Taiwanese artworks, and follow the scenic walkway down to the Natural Science Museum. The Taichung Folklore Park will give you a glimpse into the history of the region. It is dedicated to representing a more traditional way of Taiwanese life. You’ll see both authentic and recreated buildings and streets that are much more rustic than those of modern Taichung.

With inner city shopping options that have been likened to that of Hong Kong and Singapore, a bustling nightlife, and local fare guaranteed to satisfy even the fussiest palates, it’s safe to say Taichung is a great spot if you’re visiting or just passing through on your way to nearby Nantou, Sun Moon Lake, and MiaoLi County.

Best time to visit Taichung

Taichung experiences varied, and often unexpected, weather patterns throughout the year so when planning your trip, it is advisable to check weather forecasts and seasonal changes. The best time to go is during late spring in April, when clear skies and warm weather creates the perfect environment for sightseeing and outdoor exploring. The Mazu Festival takes place during this month, which celebrates the birthday of the patron goddess of the sea and you can see many street processions, colourful costumes and dragon dances all around. Avoid going between June and September as this is prime time for typhoons!

Visa & Customs

South African passport holders travelling to Taichung do need a Visa for Taiwan. Leave plenty of time for Visa processing, and make sure your passport is valid for 6 months after your return date, and that you have 3 blank pages available for entry stamps.

Health & Safety

There are no mandatory vaccinations to enter Taiwan, unless travelling from a region prone to Yellow Fever, in which case a certificate proving immunisation is required. Recommended vaccinations are for Hepatitis A & B and Japanese B Encephalitis (particularly if travelling for longer than a month between June and October). Dengue Fever is also a risk, so ensure you have mosquito repellent and take necessary precautions.

Taiwan has some fantastic healthcare facilities and medication is generally cheaper than in western countries, however, if you require specific medication, be sure to bring it with you with a doctor’s prescription (if necessary). Tap water is generally safe to drink but if you can, stick to filtered water which is widely available at all information centres and hotels.

Crime levels in Taichung are very low and tourists can enjoy the safety of walking around the city. Petty crime does exist, so exercise the usual levels of vigilance when out and about. Be aware of typhoon season between June and September and adhere to weather warnings.

Where to Stay?

Whether you’re visiting Taichung for a short getaway or planning a longer stay, there are a range of accommodation option to choose from. You’ll find many affordable hotels and guesthouses around Taichung Park and within the West District. The lively, colourful area near the Fengjia Night Market also makes for a popular lodging spot in the heart of many cool bars and Asian eateries.

For a more intriguing experience, why not stay at one of the sultry “love motels” the city is famous for? Rooms are reasonably priced and are individually themed for an unforgettable experience.

Getting Around

Walking around the different districts of the city is a great way to familiarise yourself with the cultural subtleties of each neighbourhood. You may need to dodge traffic now and then due to vendors using the sidewalks to set up shop. To experience Taiwanese food at its best, head down to Second Market in the Central District and Fifth Market in West District. Walking through Xiang Shang Market (in the Central District) will give you an unpretentious idea of what the old Chinese marketplaces must have been like.

Hiring a scooter to zip around the city is a popular option among tourists, while taxis are also convenient and relatively cheap. The bus system is dominated by the BRT Blue Line, for which you’ll need an entry card.
