From late December, when the summer heat begins, until February, Florianópolis is a bustling hive of activity and excitement. Make sure your routine vaccines that include the MMR vaccine, DPT, Chickenpox, Polio and yearly flu shots are updated before travel. A Yellow Fever vaccination and medication to prevent Malaria is recommended. The Zika virus is also a risk in Brazil and it is recommended that you protect yourself from mosquito bites with mosquito nets, repellents etc. and bear in mind that sexual transmission of Zika is also possible. Zika infection in pregnant women can cause serious birth defects, it is therefore recommended that you not travel to Brazil if pregnant. Visitors to Brazil must obtain a yellow fever certificate to be allowed back into South Africa
Florianopolis is a fairly safe city to visit, however you should still practice normal safety precautions. Keep your valuables and important documentation stored safely at your accommodation or on your person. Watch out for petty crimes like bag-snatching or pick-pocketing and do not flash expensive jewellery, clothes, valuables or large sums of money in public. Try and stick to tourist areas and avoid walking or travelling alone at night.
