Overview

The 115 islands of the Seychelles present a wonderful opportunity for a memorable tropical island experience. With some of the world’s loveliest beaches, unspoilt jungles, flourishing coral reefs, UNESCO-awarded nature reserves and so much more, this archipelago in East Africa has all it takes to reel you in for a fantastic holiday in the magnificent Indian Ocean.

The most developed areas for tourists are the inner islands – Mahé, Praslin and La Digue – which include numerous lavish five-star resorts and many alluring beaches.

The largest and most developed island – Mahé – is home to the capital, Victoria, and additionally is the location of the country’s hub airport, Seychelles International Airport. You could spend your time on this island exploring its more than 60 stunning beaches and coves, hiking across the scenic Morne Seychellois National Park or enjoying the thrilling experience of snorkelling with whale sharks.

The second largest island – Praslin – offers a more relaxed setting compared to the vibrant Mahé. It includes the breath-taking World Heritage-listed Vallée de Mai, one of only two locations on earth to find the rare coco de mer palm tree in its natural state. This valley is also the place for bird watchers: watch out for the Seychelles black parrot, the Seychelles blue pigeon, the Seychelles bulbul and the Seychelles kestrel.

La Digue – another serene destination, boasts enchanting bays and luscious hills populated by dense jungles. One of its greatest highlights is the access it gives to the surrounding islands, such as Félicité, Grand Soeur and Île Cocos. Indulge yourself in wonderful adventures exploring the natural attractions in the Seychelles.

Best time to visit Seychelles

The lush greenery you’ll find in the Seychelles is due to the country’s tropical climate and generally humid conditions, with hot weather and varying volumes of rain throughout the year. The summer (June – September) and the winter (December – March) are the most popular times to visit, so be prepared to book well in advance to get the best hotel rate and to experience this archipelago along with a high volume of visitors. Should you wish to discover the Seychelles with a more relaxed atmosphere, book your flights for the periods between the months of April and May (spring) and between October and November (autumn). April to May has only a few days of rainfall and since it sits ahead of the summer season, you’ll have the guarantee of lower hotel rates and a lower influx of tourists. With plenty of pleasant weather, enjoy the ideal opportunity to lounge on one of the archipelago’s many scenic beaches. From October to November, you’ll get more days of rainfall, but still plenty of lovely beach weather. The increase in rainfall will also give you the perfect chance to admire the lush greenery of the Seychelles’ many jungles and magnificent nature reserves.

Health & Safety

Get all the routine vaccinations before your trip to the Seychelles. Additionally, you may need to get vaccinations and medication for hepatitis A and typhoid (both spread through contaminated food and water), hepatitis B, and rabies (spread through bat and dog bites). Make sure to get mosquito and tick repellents and wear light, long-sleeve clothing, since bites from these bugs may spread other diseases.

Due to varying water quality, make sure to avoid ingesting any fresh water, especially in lakes, rivers and ponds.

While it’s expected to wear bikini tops at the beaches, they are not acceptable at places of worship and at upscale establishments. When visiting venues such as these, it’s better to wear dress shirts and long trousers.

Where to Stay?

Accommodation in the Seychelles is as breathtaking as the islands themselves — ranging from intimate self-catering guesthouses and charming Creole-style bed and breakfasts to some of the most exclusive and celebrated luxury resorts in the entire Indian Ocean. Whatever your budget, the Seychelles delivers an unforgettable island experience.

The most developed and accessible island for tourists is Mahé, home to the capital Victoria and the country’s main international airport. Mahé offers the widest range of accommodation across all budgets — from comfortable mid-range hotels and self-catering apartments in and around Victoria, to world-class five-star resorts lining the island’s most beautiful beaches. The north-west coast around Beau Vallon is the most popular beach area and offers a good selection of mid-range hotels, guesthouses and beach restaurants within easy reach of the capital. For luxury, the south and west coasts of Mahé are home to some of the island’s most exclusive properties, including the Four Seasons Resort Seychelles at Petite Anse and the Banyan Tree Mahé — both perched dramatically above private coves with sweeping Indian Ocean views.

The second largest island, Praslin, offers a more relaxed and unhurried atmosphere than Mahé. Accommodation here ranges from charming self-catering villas and family-run guesthouses to boutique beach hotels and the ultra-luxurious Lemuria Resort — one of the finest golf and beach resorts in the Indian Ocean. Staying on Praslin puts you within easy reach of the stunning Anse Lazio and Anse Georgette beaches, as well as the UNESCO-listed Vallée de Mai nature reserve.

La Digue is the most laid-back and car-free of the three main inner islands — bicycles are the primary mode of transport, and the pace of life slows to a blissful standstill. Accommodation here tends toward charming guesthouses, self-catering lodges and boutique hotels hidden among the island’s lush tropical vegetation. It is the ideal base for those wanting to explore the famous Anse Source d’Argent beach — frequently cited as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world — and the surrounding smaller islands by boat.

For the ultimate in seclusion and luxury, the Seychelles’ outer islands — including North Island, Fregate Island and Denis Island — offer some of the most exclusive private island resorts on the planet, with strictly limited guest numbers, pristine untouched reefs and the kind of privacy that is genuinely hard to find anywhere else in the world.

Getting Around

Getting around the Seychelles is a wonderfully relaxed affair — though a little advance planning goes a long way, particularly if you’re island-hopping between Mahé, Praslin and La Digue.

On Mahé, the most practical ways to get around are by taxi or hire car. Taxis are widely available at the airport, in Victoria and at most hotels — always confirm the fare before departing as meters are not always used. For maximum flexibility to explore Mahé’s more than 60 beaches, scenic mountain roads and hidden coves at your own pace, hiring a car is highly recommended. Roads on Mahé are generally well-maintained, though some routes over the mountainous interior are narrow and winding. A standard vehicle is perfectly sufficient — no 4×4 required.

Between the main inner islands, the primary modes of transport are inter-island ferries and light aircraft. Cat Cocos operates a high-speed catamaran ferry service between Mahé (Victoria) and Praslin, with the journey taking approximately one hour. A smaller ferry connects Praslin to La Digue in around 15 minutes — one of the most scenic short boat rides in the Indian Ocean, passing coral reefs and granite boulders rising from the turquoise sea.

Air Seychelles operates scheduled domestic flights between Mahé (SEZ) and Praslin (PRI), with a flight time of just 15 minutes — a spectacular and surprisingly affordable way to hop between the islands, with breathtaking aerial views of the archipelago’s coral atolls below. Charter flights to the outer islands are available through several local operators.

On Praslin, taxis and hire cars are available, though the island is small enough that many resorts and guesthouses are within easy reach of the beaches and the Vallée de Mai by taxi. On La Digue — the most charmingly car-free of the main islands — bicycles are the standard and most enjoyable way to get around. Most accommodation providers offer bicycle hire, and the island is flat enough to make cycling a genuinely easy and delightful way to explore.

For reaching the more remote outer islands and private island resorts, helicopter transfers and charter flights operated by companies such as Zil Air provide spectacular inter-island connections — a truly unforgettable way to arrive at your island retreat.
