The fashionable East Village situated along the eastern bank of the Des Moines River is a cultural hotspot with trendy restaurants and bars.
Undoubtedly one of the most impressive buildings in the country and sporting a spectacular grand entrance is the Iowa State Capitol Building. Its golden dome and the stunning views of the cityscape are worth climbing the 300 steps for.
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places is the Des Moines City Hall with its grand Beaux Arts style architecture. The hall radiates a presence that cannot be ignored. Other notable landmarks are James Jordan House, Henry Wallace House and the WWII Freedom Memorial.
A huge attraction is Iowa’s State Fair held every August, a tradition going all the way back to 1854. Thousands of visitors descend on the state capital to join in the festive fun. Country music, food, monster trucks, a parade and concerts all make this a star attraction.
Blank Park Zoo housing over 1500 animals, Iowa Primate Learning Sanctuary where children can learn about chimps and orang-utans; and the Adventureland Amusement Park with its roller coasters and water park complex with multiple water slides make Des Moines a family friendly destination.
To slow down the pace, visitors can choose the Des Moines Botanical Center, Gray's Lake, Saylorville Lake and the Big Creek State Park for relaxation in a peaceful natural environment.
