Kisumu’s picturesque surrounds are a joy to explore, especially the Impala and Bird Sanctuaries. The Impala Sanctuary is one of the smallest wildlife reserves in the country, and it’s home to not only impala – there are hippo, reptiles and birds residing here too.
In the town itself, you can visit the Kibuye Market, and explore the Kisumu Museum to get an insight into the tradition and cultures of the area, with displays of weapons, jewellery, farm tools and other fascinating items. One of the most popular displays is of a variety of lethal snakes including puff adders, spitting cobras and mambas. The largest display is sponsored by UNESCO; it’s called Ber-gi-dala, and is a complete replica of a traditional Luo homestead.
You should also pay a visit to the tall Town Clock that is located in the middle of the main street, Oginga Odinga Road. It was erected in 1938 in memory of the Governor and Commander in Chief of Kenya, HE Chief Marshall Sir Robert Brooke Pophan.
