Rochester is not the most popular place in New York State for sightseeing, but the Genesee River Gorge as well as its three waterfalls is worth the trip alone. If you’re a nature lover, you’ll enjoy the scenic Highland Park, while Genesee Valley Park offers a number of recreation options.

Cultural attractions are noteworthy in Rochester, though. The Strong National Museum of Play is an absolute must-see, especially if you have young children with you. If you’re a history buff, stop by the Susan B. Anthony Museum & House which is a haven for students of the women’s rights movement.

There are several very good museums and galleries in the city. Artisan Works is an NPO located in a massive warehouse. All the media here is for sale and you are likely to bump into many of the artists working away in the provided studio. George Eastman House was built by Eastman Kodak and is really three museums in one: the building; its living areas and the photography and film archive which are possibly the largest in the world.

The Strasenburgh Planetarium offers an array of large format films as well as planetarium shows. Admission is free on Saturdays during the summer.

Rochester is extremely family-friendly and besides the parks and museums, the Seabreeze Amusement Park near the mouth of the bay provides ample fun for kids.

When it comes to shopping in the city, Route 104 and Route 252 dominate. You’ll find all the major retailers along the routes as well as several indoor shopping malls.

Hiring a car is a good way to get around Rochester but if you’re up for the adventure you can certainly explore on foot or bicycle. There is a municipal bus system too. If you’re downtown, you can travel along the Rochester Skyway – a system of enclosed elevated walkways and underground tunnels which connect various buildings. It’s really useful in winter!
