Best time to visit Oman

Oman experiences warm to hot temperatures all year, with some cool breezes and even a chilly night or two over the winter season (November to March). During the summer (June to August), temperatures have been known to get exceedingly hot and it is not uncommon to reach 40°C. During this time, locals tend to enjoy a break in the city of Salalah, a hilly city with lush greenery. Salalah is the only city which experiences a monsoon-like phenomenon every year, known as khareef. Winters in Oman are beautiful, with average day time temperatures hovering around 26°C, and the cool, night time temperatures thoroughly enjoyed by the locals.

Visa & Customs

South Africans who wish to visit Oman do need to apply for a visa, but you can do this on arrival in the country. To obtain this visa, you would need to have a return ticket to your home country or your next destination, and at least six months left on your passport. The visa is valid for 90 days. All paperwork will be done at Muscat International Airport.

Oman is considered a highly safe country, with very few reports of crime of any kind. As this destination is in a very hot region of the Middle East, it is important to stay hydrated. Try to carry and refill your water bottle as not all public areas (such as certain beaches and parks) will have refreshment vendors.

It is important to respect the culture in Oman, and so women are advised to dress modestly and to cover their legs until their knees. You may be denied entry to certain places if you don’t adhere to the dress code.

It is always important to have your vaccines up-to-date when you are travelling. When visiting Oman, it is recommended to get vaccinations for hepatitis A and typhoid.
