Best time to visit Kruger National Park

Deciding when to travel to the Kruger National Park is largely dependent on what you plan to do while in the park. Plenty of travellers visit this attraction during the dry winter months (April – September). This is the best time to view the wildlife, as the various species will visit the waterholes more often. Days are warm while the nights range from cool to cold. For birdwatchers and lovers of flora, visit between November and February (wet season). Temperatures will be hot while there will be a greater volume of rainfall. These conditions make it easier to catch sights of the migratory birds and the chance to admire wildflowers in bloom. Do note, however, that foliage will be denser. To avoid the crowds, visit between February and November. Should you visit during December and January, try and avoid the southern and central parts of the park.

Visa & Customs

Should you be visiting from abroad, you will need a tourist visa to enter South Africa. This type of visa is valid for 90 days. Check your local consular website to determine if your country is exempt from this visa.

Health & Safety

Before you depart from your home country, make sure to visit your doctor to find out about all the routine vaccinations. There is no risk of yellow fever in South Africa, but the government does require you to provide proof of immunisation should you be coming from a country where this disease is a risk. You may also need to get vaccinations and medication for other diseases, but this is dependent on what you plan to do in the park. These diseases include:

• Hepatitis A and typhoid (spread through contaminated food and water)

• Hepatitis B (spread through sexual contact and contaminated needles)

• Rabies (spread through the bites of infected mammals)

• Malaria (spread through mosquito bites)

Should you be driving through the park, make sure to respect the speed limit as big game (like elephants, rhinos and giraffes) do cross the roads and an accident can be lethal to both animal and driver. Speed limits are restricted to 50 km/h on tarred roads and 40 km/h on gravel roads.

Visitors are not allowed to drive around at night.

Do not exit a vehicle while in the park, unless you are in a designated area such as viewpoints and between yellow lines on high water bridges.

Should you be carrying a firearm, make sure to have it declared and sealed at the entrance gate.

Do not feed the animals for your own safety and for the well-being of the animals.
