Overview

Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (IATA: MQP, ICAO: FAKN) is a privately owned international airport located 27 kilometres northeast of Mbombela (formerly Nelspruit) — the capital of Mpumalanga province. Opened on 21 October 2002 as a replacement for the smaller Nelspruit Airport, KMI Airport was purpose-built to unlock the Mpumalanga region for both domestic and international tourism, bringing travellers closer to one of the world’s greatest wildlife destinations.

The airport is visually unlike any other in South Africa. Its terminal building is constructed almost entirely in an African thatch design, with a total floor space of 7,350 m² — making it the largest thatched structure in Africa. The design reflects the surrounding bushveld and has become a celebrated landmark in its own right, greeting safari-bound travellers with a sense of the wilderness before they’ve even left the airport. The 3.1 km runway holds an ICAO-approved International Aerodrome Licence and can accommodate aircraft up to Boeing 747 and Airbus A340 size — a remarkable capability for a regional airport. It is also the holder of a Fire and Rescue Category 7 licence, the first in Mpumalanga province.

MQP is served by Airlink and FlySafair, operating routes to Johannesburg (OR Tambo), Cape Town, and Durban domestically, and internationally to Victoria Falls (Zimbabwe), Livingstone (Zambia), and Vilanculos (Mozambique). FlySafair launched its Cape Town–Mbombela route in April 2024, now operating daily, significantly improving affordable access to the Kruger region from the Western Cape.

Beyond Kruger National Park — which attracts nearly two million visitors annually and lies just 30 minutes from the airport — the broader Mpumalanga region offers some of South Africa’s most spectacular attractions. The Blyde River Canyon, the third largest canyon in the world, the Panorama Route, the Sudwala Caves, ancient gold-rush towns, and the fertile Lowveld fruit-growing region all lie within easy reach of MQP.

Shopping

Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport offers a well-curated selection of shops and dining options within its distinctive thatched terminal, with a strong focus on African arts, crafts, and safari-related retail.

Shops at Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport include: African artworks, crafts, and curios, souvenir stores, magazines, drinks, snacks, and confectionaries — ideal for stocking up for the drive into the Kruger National Park.

Food and drink at KMI Airport: A selection of commercial restaurants, bars, and casual cafés offer a range of South African and international food and beverage options — with the relaxed bushveld atmosphere of the terminal making the pre-flight experience genuinely enjoyable.

Please check your airline’s baggage restrictions before purchasing items at the airport, particularly if you are travelling onwards to lodge airstrips or smaller regional aircraft.

In South Africa, foreign currency can generally be purchased up to 60 days before your departure date.

The following documents are required to purchase foreign exchange:

Parking options at KMI Airport include:

Payment machines are located inside the airport terminal building at the main entrance, accepting cash and card. Arriving with extra time to find a bay during these periods is advisable.
