Make sure to visit a doctor to get all the routine vaccinations four to six weeks before you leave South Africa. Depending on your plans for your time in Vanuatu, you may additionally need vaccinations for hepatitis A, typhoid, hepatitis B and malaria.

Take special care at night, especially in Port Vila. Avoid the back streets of Port Vila and Luganville. In the rural areas, women should take care to never wander around alone, as there have been reports of sexual assault.

Should you go swimming or snorkelling, take care to watch out for aquatic animals, some of which are poisonous. The most dangerous of these is the stonefish.

At Mount Yasur, should you be on foot, follow the advice given by the guides to ensure your safety, as the volcano has been known to emit projectiles of debris and lava.
