The fourth largest city in the Ukraine, Dnepropetrovsk is located 452km from the capital, Kiev. The city is a major industrial centre, and was once a major hub for the Soviet Union’s arms, space and nuclear industries. As a result, Dnepropetrovsk was not open to the public until the 1990s. Today it’s an important commercial and political centre, a lively city situated on the Dniepr River renowned for its scenery and history.
The city was originally a fortress settlement until the 16th Century, and the new city was founded by Russian Prince Potemkin in 1776.

Dnepropetrovsk is a very scenic city with a number of green open spaces. The main street, Marksa Prospekt, is a wide boulevard that stretches through the centre of the city. It’s lined with a selection of shops and restaurants. Along the boulevard you’ll pass the main square, Zhovtneva or October Square, home to a beautiful cathedral erected by Catherine the Great in 1787 as well as a number of other important buildings, including the Museum of History, and a pretty park. There are a number of other historical buildings worth exploring in the city, and you’ll find many of them along Central Avenue between Pushkin Prospekt and the Embankment as well as sections near Globy and Schevchenka Parks.
