See and do

Tallinn is said to be one of the oldest capitals in Europe, boasting archaeological sites dating back thousands of years. Not surprisingly, historical landmarks and attractions are right up there on the list of top things to see – the old towns of (All-linn) Lower Town and Toompea (Upper Town) are where many of these can be found. In Upper Town, highlights include the Castrum Danorum and the Russian Orthodox Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. In Lower Town, landmarks include the town square known as Raekoja Plats, towers and walls and St Olaf Church tower.
Other historical sights to look out for around the city are the Estonian Open Air Museum and St Catherine’s Passage, which showcase the city’s rich heritage and former structures. The Botanical Gardens and Tallinn Zoo are perfect for a walk through, or you can even hire a boat on the Pirita River or visit the beach in Pirita. Art fundi’s can browse art museums and galleries, while Kadriorg Palace tours are a must.
Keep some of your Euros aside for shopping, because there are some rather amazing little shops to be found. Katarina Gild in St Catherine’s Passage has many tiny stores, while Koopa Galerii is where you can pick up local artwork. Kaubamaja is a good department store that offers a wide range of items – it is fairly simple in comparison to the speciality shops however. Talking of which, knitted clothing at Naiiv makes a nice take home gift for friends and family – local craft from Zlobin Souvenirs or Les Petites is a good bet too. There are also large shopping centres such as Rocca al Mare Mall to check out.
Getting to and from shops, galleries, landmarks and your hotel will not be too much of a hassle. Public transport is for the most part organised, affordable and safe. There is a massive bus system (over 60 lines), a tram line (four lines) and trolleybus (seven lines), all of which connect you to various parts of the city.
