About Kruger Park Gateway Airport

About Kruger Park Gateway Airport

Kruger Park Gateway Airport (IATA: PHW) — also known as Phalaborwa Airport and previously Hendrik van Eck Airport — sits directly on the western boundary of the Kruger National Park in Phalaborwa, Limpopo. Opened on 3 April 1992 and built by Airlink, it was the primary air gateway to Kruger’s quieter northern camps including Letaba, Mopani, Olifants, Shingwedzi, and Punda Maria — camps far less accessible from the southern entrance airports. The Phalaborwa Gate into Kruger is less than 2 km from the terminal.

There are currently no scheduled commercial flights at PHW. Airlink suspended services on 10 June 2020. Travellers are advised to fly to Hoedspruit Airport (HDS) (~1.5 hours by road, served by Airlink and FlySafair) or Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (MQP) (~2.5 hours, served by Airlink and FlySafair) and arrange a lodge transfer or car hire from there.

Overview

Kruger Park Gateway Airport (IATA: PHW, ICAO: FAPH) is a small regional airport situated in Phalaborwa, Limpopo — directly bordering the western fence of the Kruger National Park, with the Phalaborwa Gate less than 2 km from the terminal. The airport was originally known as Hendrik van Eck Airport, named after the South African engineer and industrialist Dr Hendrik van Eck, who was instrumental in the industrialisation of Phalaborwa and the surrounding region.

The airport was developed and officially opened on 3 April 1992 by Airlink, who constructed and managed the facility as a purpose-built gateway to the northern Kruger region. It gave travellers direct air access to Kruger’s quieter northern camps — Letaba, Mopani, Olifants, Shingwedzi, and Punda Maria — which are further from the southern entrance gates served by Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (MQP). The airport has one asphalt runway of 1,373 metres, sits at an elevation of 436 metres above sea level, and in addition to scheduled flights historically served private charter and safari lodge transfer operations.

Airlink suspended all scheduled commercial services to and from PHW on 10 June 2020. No scheduled passenger airline currently operates from the airport. Charter flights for lodge and safari transfers continue to operate. Travellers wishing to fly to the Phalaborwa region and northern Kruger are currently best served by flying to one of two nearby airports with active scheduled services:

  • Hoedspruit Airport (HDS) — approximately 1.5 hours west of Phalaborwa by road, served by Airlink and FlySafair (Cape Town route launched October 2025). Hoedspruit gives excellent access to the central and northern Kruger as well as private reserves including Timbavati and Thornybush.
  • Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (MQP) — approximately 2.5 hours south of Phalaborwa by road, served by Airlink and FlySafair with routes to Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban, and international destinations. MQP is better suited for access to southern and central Kruger camps.

Phalaborwa itself is one of South Africa’s most distinctive towns — a mining community that borders the world’s most iconic game reserve. The Palabora Copper Mine, one of the largest open-pit copper mines in the world, has operated here since 1966. The town also provides access to the Hans Merensky Nature Reserve, the Letaba River, and excellent birding throughout the Limpopo bushveld.

Shopping

Kruger Park Gateway Airport is a small, compact facility and its retail offering is limited — suited to its role as a charter and transfer hub rather than a commercial passenger terminal.

At the terminal: The Exotic Africa curio shop offers African souvenirs, crafts, and gifts — a well-stocked option for last-minute purchases before a game drive or lodge transfer. A coffee shop serves drinks and light snacks for arriving and departing passengers.

For broader shopping, Phalaborwa town centre is approximately 2 km from the airport and has supermarkets, pharmacies, and retail stores. The Phalaborwa Crossing shopping centre is the main retail hub in town.

Facilities

Kruger Park Gateway Airport is a compact single-terminal facility. There are no passenger lounges at PHW.

  • Coffee shop and Exotic Africa curio shop
  • Banking and ATM facilities
  • Fire and rescue services
  • Medical and emergency services

The airport continues to handle charter and lodge transfer flights, and its facilities remain operational for this purpose. Private and corporate aircraft can be accommodated on the 1,373-metre asphalt runway.
