Best time to visit Hawaii

The Hawaiian Islands are famous for having fantastic weather all year long. There is always sun and a good time happening on these paradise locations. Hawaii is most crowded with expensive flights and accommodation over the American summer holidays as this is when families are able to vacation together. The summer season falls between June and August. The second peak season occurs from December until April, though it can be a bit wet over this time. For cheap flights to Hawaii, the best time to visit would be in the months of May, September, October and November.

Visa & Customs

South Africans who wish to visit the islands of Hawaii in the USA will need a visa to do so. The process has been known to take a long time, so it’s best to start as early as possible. You will need to complete your application and submit numerous documents, as well as schedule an appointment with the US Embassy in your city.

Health & Safety

The islands of Hawaii are generally quite safe with few crimes reported. It does tend to get very busy over the peak seasons though and for this reason it is best to be aware of your surroundings. Try to keep your valuables out of sight and don’t walk around alone late in the evenings. Women are also advised to carry handbags close to their body as theft does sometimes occur. There are no vaccines required for a trip to the USA, but it is always recommended to go for a routine check-up and to speak to your doctor before any trip overseas.

Where to Stay?

There are so many options for accommodation during your stay across the eight islands in Hawaii, with more than 300 hotels and many more guest houses and cheaper alternatives available as well.

Oahu is the most visited island, with Maui and Kauai as second and third. Of course, there is also Hawaii which is known as the Big Island. All of the islands have plenty of accommodation that caters to solo travellers, couples and families.

Getting Around

There are two options for travelling between the islands – by boat or by air. The boat shuttles are available between the smaller islands but for longer distances you will have to book a flight in advance. You can also hire a car if you have an international car license as there are many car rental agencies found at the airports.

On the island that you’ll be staying you may want to move around on foot or hire a bicycle. There is also a scheduled bus service that can be found on the larger islands such as Oahu and Hawaii (Big Island). Try to avoid using taxis as these have been known to be really expensive.
