About Lanseria International Airport

About Lanseria International Airport

Lanseria International Airport (IATA: HLA), situated approximately 45 kilometres northwest of Johannesburg, is a convenient alternative to OR Tambo for travellers based in Pretoria, Sandton, Fourways, and the northern suburbs. This privately-owned airport started out as a grass-strip airfield in 1972, developed by two Pretoria-based pilots, and was formerly used primarily by corporate and executive travellers. Today, Lanseria offers easier access to the northern suburbs of Johannesburg without the congestion of the N1 or N3.

Lanseria International Airport is Johannesburg’s alternative airport and is not part of ACSA. In February 1990, it became historically significant as the first place in Gauteng that Nelson Mandela set foot on after his release from prison. FlySafair is currently the only scheduled commercial airline at HLA, operating flights to Cape Town, Durban, George, and Gqeberha. HLA is approximately a 45-minute drive from Johannesburg city centre.

Overview

Lanseria International Airport (IATA: HLA, ICAO: FALA) is a privately owned international airport in Gauteng, South Africa, serving as the primary alternative to OR Tambo International Airport (JNB) for Johannesburg and Pretoria travellers. Unlike OR Tambo, Lanseria is not operated by ACSA (Airports Company South Africa), giving it more operational flexibility and a notably relaxed, less congested passenger experience.

The airport carries significant historical importance in post-apartheid South Africa: in February 1990, Lanseria was the first place in Gauteng that former President Nelson Mandela set foot on after his release from prison — a moment that marked the beginning of South Africa’s democratic transition.

Lanseria’s growth accelerated significantly from the early 2000s, driven by rising demand from low-cost carriers and the growing population of Johannesburg’s northern suburbs. A major expansion of the terminal in 2016 added capacity and improved passenger amenities, while the November 2013 runway upgrade enabled the airport to handle larger aircraft. Today, Lanseria is South Africa’s fifth-largest airport by passenger numbers, processing approximately 2.5 million passengers per year.

FlySafair, South Africa’s largest airline by seat capacity, is currently the only scheduled commercial airline operating from Lanseria, offering direct flights to Cape Town (multiple daily), Durban (daily), George (daily), and Gqeberha/Port Elizabeth (daily). The airport’s continued growth and strategic location in the northwest of Johannesburg means it is frequently discussed as a future major hub as the city’s population expands northwards.

Popular flight routes to Lanseria International Airport include Cape Town to Lanseria and Durban to Lanseria.
