The East Midlands in the United Kingdom offers a number of exciting holiday destinations, whether you’re looking for a country break or a city adventure. The area is made up of four major counties, namely Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire, Northamptonshire and Lincolnshire, each offering its own special charm. Nottingham is home to Newstead Abbey and the Elizabethan Hardwick Hall, whilst Leicestershire offers Market Bosworth, famous for being the site of the battle of Bosworth Field. The dignified old city of Lincoln is home to a fine cathedral and its surrounding countryside is postcard-pretty, offering historic market towns that are a treat to explore.
The most distinctive feature of Lincolnshire is the Fens – fields as flat as pancakes that extend all the way into Cambridgeshire that have been regained from the sea and the marshes. Fenland villages boast stunning parish churches that are worth visiting. On the coast, one finds beautiful long sand beaches all the way to Skegness, the main resort in the region. This coastline is very popular with holidaymakers, but large portions are protected as nature reserves. The best of these to visit is the Gibraltar Point National Nature Reserve.
